Hog’s Head PubCast #6

by Travis Prinzi on October 29, 2006

hogshead.jpg Is Halloween Evil or Anti-Christian? Scarcrux: the Neverending Debate; Harry Potter plotholes; cut short by baby crying. Note: Some audio issues with the voice recording on this one; I’ll get it fixed before the next pubcast. It’s probably not even something to be “fixed;” I was talking low to try not to wake Sophia. You’ll have to turn up the volume when I’m talking.

Re: HP plotholes — Actually, the ancient Romans developed fairly advanced indoor plumbing technology, without the aid of magic! So, I don’t think indoor plumbing at Hogwarts 1000 years ago is implausible.

Good question about GoF and the portkey, though. Maybe it’s because villains rarely take the easy way out and prefer to indulge their pride by concocting elaborate schemes?

Excellent! One problem solved.

I’ve thought about the Invisibility Cloak as well. It would have to be quite large to cover all three of them; however, when Harry first receives it, I think the problem is solved as to the size. It is described as “something fluid” and “slithers” to the floor. When Harry picks it up, it’s like “water woven into material”.

So, rather than being a plot hole, it’s just that we don’t have anything like it–it is, after all, magical. One of those things that we have to accept as working a certain way in the wizarding world that would be not at all feasible in our own.

At least, that’s enough for me–but probably not enough for most people.

I enjoyed your thoughts on the podcast. I just hadn’t had a chance to listen till today–and I still need to read about Halloween–which I’ve always enjoyed too.

w.r.t. the invisibility cloak: In our real muggle world there are many fabrics that are very fine. From the Shetlands(a wee bit north of Hogwarts) women/people spin wool yarn so fine that it’s called cobweb, and knit shawls called wedding-ring shawls, because they can be passed through one’s ring. A full size shawl could be easily stuffed in your pocket.
