del Toro Directing Lovecraft

January 30th, 2008 · 4 Comments · Gryffindor Common Room

I had heard about the potential for this when I listened to S.T. Joshi’s “Reflections on H.P. Lovecraft” lecture, but it appears to be official: scheduled for release in 2010, del Toro will be directing a film version of At the Mountains of Madness.  Thanks to Jeremy for the E-Owl.

No Del Toro for Deathly Hallows - The Hobbit Instead?

January 28th, 2008 · 59 Comments · The Movies

Much to the chagrin of many here, Del Toro was not in the running to direct Deathly Hallows, because he’s in talks to direct The Hobbit.
Is this true?  And if so, is it a double blow?  (No Delo Toro for DH, no Jackson for Hobbit?)
Brief Del Toro discussion makes it into my next pubcast, which [...]

Our Hero Harry, the Snaped Crusader (Issue #1)

January 26th, 2008 · 7 Comments · Harry, Hogwarts School of Literature

by Dave
Harry is a hero. That Harry Potter draws from long established literary heroic traditions is well documented. Nearly every book length treatment or anthology concerning the series addresses this subject and examines the link between Harry’s more traditional literary roots in alchemical and mythic-heroic traditions and his postmodern deconstruction of the hero [...]

Several quick housekeeping items here at SoG. First, shameless self-promotion:

I’m finally starting to get up to speed on how to promote a blog, and I’ve added the blog to Technorati. I’m not entirely sure what that is, but I know it’s supposed to help get the blog more exposure. I’ve [...]

Discussion: Ursula K. LeGuin on “the midlist”

January 24th, 2008 · 49 Comments · Gryffindor Common Room

Andrew Sullivan posted this excerpt from an essay by Ursula K. LeGuin (author of the Earthsea books) on the decline of reading (I think you have to be a subscriber to read the whole essay):
Over the years, books kept in print may earn hundreds of thousands of dollars for their publisher and author. A few [...]

Discussion: The Horla and Cthulhu

I was suddenly taken back to our Lovecraft month today as I listened to this week’s story from The Classic Tales: Guy de Maupassant’s “The Horla” (text here). It’s a great reading by B.J. Harrison of a truly chilling tale, and it strongly reminded me of Lovecraft’s Cthulhu stories. As I [...]

The Runcie documentary that’s caught some attention here and at HogPro is a mixed bag for me as a Potter reader. Stylistically, the film is as engaging as any documentary I’ve ever seen — which is quite a few because I’m a big geek (I even watched a documentary on the Sundance Channel [...]
