New Poll: In which fictional drinking establishment would you most like to imbibe

May 4th, 2008 · 22 Comments · Gryffindor Common Room

By Matthew

The watering hole plays a strong part in the adventures of many of our fictional heroes and heroines and I’d like to have a real-life poke around in some of them. The inns, that is.

Please comment with your choice and why you’d like to go there… or not.

    Matthew,

I recognize some of these places (The Prancing Pony, The Leaky Cauldron, Mos Eisley (!), and The Hog’s Head), basically the Tolkien/Rowling/Star Wars bunch, but I don’t even recall reading about most of the rest. A quick overview of what comes from where would helpful.

I picked the Prancing Pony, as it seems a lovely crossroads for the people of Middle Earth and I’d probably hear some lovely tales of the people therein…

    There you go, reyhan.

I picked the Mos Eisley cantina just to have a look at the aliens though it may be a bit rough for my tastes. I’d want to see that wolfman that Lucas cut out of his special needs version.

    Thanks Matthew.

It was the Green Dragon I was having an especially hard time with: Google gave so many options, some of which were quite intriguing although unfortunately illegal.

Again unfortunately, I’ve never watched Buffy or Angel, or read the Hitchiker’s Guide, and I’ve never seen the Vincent Price movie, so I can’t pick those.

I think my choice would be the cantina at Mos Eisley as well. I agree it was a little rough, but I like the way everyone minds their own business. I also like the jazz band. And most of all, I like the sense of infinite possibilities - anything could happen there. I am also influenced by the Lego Starwars II videogame which my 7 year old has been playing for a while. The cantina is the entry post for for all the levels of the game. It’s also the place where you can buy equipment and characters. Did you know that the ghost of Obi Wan costs 200,000 credits? Only the Emperor costs more.

I’d like another option from Adams: The Domain of the King, from the 5th (I think) book in the trilogy.
Another good option is the old All of the Above. I wouldn’t mind visiting most of these places.

  • 6 Scott // May 4, 2008 at 6:11 pm

except for the Buffy/Angel stuff. Really could care less about those series.

  • 7 Black Angus // May 4, 2008 at 8:06 pm

I picked the Bronze because I might get into mortal danger and Buffy could save me…
But my favourite bar is not on the list. It’s the one that an Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman walk into, along with a horse.

    Brilliant poll Matthew. :)

I would definitely go with the Mos Eisley Cantina in Tatooine. Like reyhan said, anything could happen there.

Another reason I picked the Mos Eisley Cantina is their no-droid policy. I hate drinking with those guys. They’re always uptight and emotional.

    Black Angus,
You always were a sucker for the female warrior heroes. Xena, Buffy, River Tamm- but I didn’t know about the rescue fetish.

    Matthew,

I sense the potential for a droid civil rights movement here, or at least a good plot for a story. Do you suppose Lucas was influenced by Philip K Dick? Would Han Solo drink with Roy Batty? Who would you rather drink with, Black Angus: Zhora or Pris?

  • 11 korg20000bc // May 5, 2008 at 8:32 am

    reyhan,
I think in one of the Dark Horse comic series there was a droid rebellion. I cannot remember the reasons, though.

I don’t think Lucas was influenced by Philip K Dick. I don’t think he would want to use something that he didn’t concieve of other than the Buck Rogers matinees and so forth that he saw as a child. Sometimes I think Lucas fluked Star Wars…

I remember my Dad saying that he went to see Star Wars about four times. He was a bass trombonist and was blown away by the music and sound in the movie. Surely Williams was the right man for that job!

I reckon Solo would be happy to drink with Roy but I don’t think the feeling would be reciprocated. I see Batty as someone with a strong warrior code that Solo has not.

Back to the pubs. I’d love to have a stay in the Prancing Pony. Meet a few Dwarves and rangers and hobbits, taste their fine beer and join the folk in the common room. The Green Dragon sounds like a great local where all is discussed. I like to pull the hood off the shady character in the corners of the Leaky Cauldron and reveal… who knows what?

Ten-Foreward would be alright if Whoopi Goldberg didn’t try to talk to me.

    Black Angus,
Is that favourite bar of yours the one where every one jumps out the window and kills himself?

And while we’re there did you hear the one about the baby fur seal that walks into a club?

    Boom boom.

I went with the Green Dragon. Living in the city now, the idea of being able to occasionally stop by the tavern of the peaceful, shire-dwelling hobbits is an attractive one.

  • 13 Dave the Longwinded // May 5, 2008 at 3:04 pm

I’m going with Mos Eisley — the best jazz band in the galaxy, until Lucas screwed with it in the “updated” version.

Reyhan, the Lego Star Wars games are really nifty little hilarious takes on the movies. FYI, the lego motif is being plastered on both Batman and Indiana Jones later this year — it might be a bit of overkill, but Traveller’s Tales is being really smart about the franchises they work within.

How about a little Lego Harry Potter, anyone? By sheer virtue of existing, it would have to be better than the Electronic Arts HP games licensed along with the movies.

The Green Dragon is my kind of place. It’s the center of the community and appears nice and clean–something the Leaky Cauldron does not appear to be

    Matthew,

If your dad is still around, send him this link. It’s all there, Darth Vader’s theme song, the trombones, the cellos, the drums, and all in Lego.

Also, I only realized after I wrote the comment about Han Solo and Roy Batty that no way would those two ever sit down for a drink: remember who played Deckard!

Dave, we’re anxiously awaiting the latest Indiana Jones movie. You have no idea how much fun it is to watch the next generation discover Star Wars and Indiana Jones. My 7 year old is particularly interested in Anakin Skywalker, refuses to call him Darth Vader and insists that underneath his costume he was good all along!

    Oh yeah, I forgot.

Matthew gets a nomination for the worst pun.

  • 17 Travis Prinzi // May 6, 2008 at 3:33 pm

This didn’t strike me till just now, but I’m wondering…would anyone have selected the Three Broomsticks had it been on the list?

  • 18 reyhan // May 6, 2008 at 7:47 pm

The place has two things going for it, butterbeer and Madam Rosmerta. I’ve always been a little curious about butterbeer, and even later in life, Julie Christie is sexier than most women half her age. But no, I prefer the sci-fi meets Old West charms of the cantina at Mos Eisley to the medieval decor at the Three Broomsticks.

  • 19 Kairanie // May 7, 2008 at 1:43 am

I would have to go to the Golden Perch; after all, Pippin says they have the best beer in the East Farthing.

  • 20 Sandra Miesel // May 7, 2008 at 5:18 pm

I originally thought that “butterbeer” was a joke on cream ale but apparently there really is such a thing.

The rest of you may not have heard of this tavern, but Poul Anderson’s Old Phoenix lies at the intersection of alternate universes and attracts a clientele of both historical and archetypical characters.

  • 21 Black Angus // May 8, 2008 at 2:08 am

    Korg,
    Ugly Dave Gray you ain’t.

    reyhan,
    Zhora, thanks very much.
Is there a bar in the movies where where a character played by Jenny Augutter drinks? Maybe there’s one in Logan’s Run? Then that’s the bar I want to drink in.

  • 22 Victoria // May 9, 2008 at 6:10 pm

As I cannot choose between them I will have to say that I would most like to hang out at the Leaky Pony.

And no, I wouldn’t have chosen the Three Broomsticks, I prefer the more shabby non-traditional atmosphere of the Hog’s to The Broom.
