Nice ramblings, Travis. :) Glad you’re back on air. Sorry I won’t be able to attend any of the conferences this summer.

Don’t be surprised if when you become an English teacher or professor, that some people will think that’s a hobby as opposed to a job. :)

And don’t be suprised if people think all you do is diagram sentences all day…

And your students expect you to be old and crotchety and wear a suit that smells of Aqua Velva. As a 29 year old who regularly wears jeans and a Pearl Jam t-shirt to class, I can dismiss that one pretty quickly…

And when your students tell you that you’re “digging too deep” into a book, or “making way too much out of it”…That’s the one conversation that always drives me nuts!

Somehow at some time, critical thinking became a dirty word…

I always try to get around it by making them write a short analysis of The Simpsons — then I found out they like The Family Guy better…

sheesh…

Dave, I think critical thinking became a dirty word because so little of it goes on nowadays.

Since we live in a sound bite culture & a culture where emotions are encouraged over thought, anybody who actually uses reason or critical thinking is always bringing up unpleasant truths & realities which people don’t want to hear. Don’t confuse me with the facts is our war cry today as opposed to Socrates’ old maxim, the unexamined life is not worth living.

Oh, I forgot. You mentioned He Who Must Not Be Named on the podcast. Even said his real name. Spooky…
