There’s plenty of items in the Harry Potter stories that I’d love to get my hands on.
Oh, what fun could be had.

I chose the pensieve for personal reasons and because it really would save my life. I have the problem that my brain doesn’t store memories well and it’s current to about three years ago. Before that it’s just the odd snippet. A pensieve would really help me out in daily life. And then of course I was fascinated with it in the series. Just seems marvelous to linger around in your own (and other people’s) memories.
But if I could choose something not for it’s usefulness but just for fun, I would definitely go for the extendibles ears ! Not that I have opportunities or necessity for eavesdropping, but the concept is just hilarious !

To me, the Marauder’s Map was the most visually cool. (In the movie), where Snape snatches it from Harry is one of my favorite scenes.
I would like to get one look in that Mirror of Erised though - to see if I’m on the right track.
I could REALLY use a wand.

I could really, really use a Time-Turner.
If nothing else, I could finally find out what the back of my hair really looks like.

Ha! Yeah, I went with the Time-Turner as well. Might not be the coolest of the magical inventions, but it’s the one I’d choose.

I want all the ones people mentioned above. The Pensieve so I can replay the past, especially other people’s memories. The Mirror of Erised for some insight. The Time Turner especially so I can have more time to finish what I’m working on. Molly’s Clock so I know that the people I love are safe. And I agree with Carol above that the Marauder’s Map, especially the way it was depicted in PoA, is totally cool.
There are also a few not mentioned in the poll which would be cool. The Foe Glass - just so I’d know if I had foes! Hermione’s small beaded handbag - anyone with children would love that one! Floo powder to get around quickly. The Elder Wand has some attraction (although you’d have to be a witch or wizard to make it work). Not so much the Resurrection Stone - I hope I’ll never need to want that one!
But I think that the magical object I’d like most of all would be my very own broomstick. It might not be the smoothest of rides (no springs or suspension that I could see) and the seat looks darned uncomfortable, and bugs in your face and teeth are probably the norm, but it’s the next best thing to flight that I’ve ever heard of.

Keeping in mind you said the coolest, I went with the Flying Ford Anglia. After that, I’d chose the prefect’s bath & the Marauder’s Map.
As for most practical item & most desirable, I’d have to say the pensieve. It would work wonders to be able to see things from another person’s point of view, assuming you could get access to their memories.

The Pensieve is the one magical object that I’ve always been most fascinated by. I’ve just had this fascination with the act of perception and the individual’s experience with it. Thus, one of my favorite parts of philosophy as an undergrad was epistemology, and I’m currently reading through all this stuff on phenomenology (as much as I can understand it, anyway…).

Invisibility Cloak, in my mind, is second only to the Mirror of Erised. What better tools could there be for self-reflection and retreat from the world?

Agree with reyhan - a broomstick would be great! And that handbag…I can’t imagine how useful that would be every time I’ve got Sophie’s bag, her blanky, her bear, my bag, my laptop, my coffee mug, and Sophie herself in my arms, heading out to the car in the morning to take her to grandma and papa.

When did Sophia’s name get changed to Sophie?

Just a nickname. We call her both.

My own pick was for the Marauder’s map. I liked how it looked in my own imagination more than the movie. So useful for a mischevious student and I love how it responded to Snape’s questioning.
I’d also love an invisibility cloak. I could have endless fun sneaking into a room and waiting for the occupants to say to each other “What’s that smell… is it you?”

Korg,
Even with an invisibility cloak everyone would still know where that smell came from.
I picked pensieve because I’m sure my memories have changed. It would be interesting to see how and why.
But more importantly, my memories of people who have gone are dimming and I’d like a refresher. It would be powerful to relive seeing my parents again but it would be frustrating to only observe and not communicate.
Just as addictive as the Mirror of Erised.

Black Angus,
I know what you’re saying about the pensieve but I’d keep looking at memories that would make me cringe at my myself. It’d take a lot of discipline to use in a way that wasn’t self-destructive.

I’ve got to get me an avatar.

I’ve wondered about that too. I’m not sure it is possible… Travis?

Avatars here? I think it is possible, but I don’t know how to do it. Let me look into it when I get time.

Yay ! Gravatars ! I don’t get to see them often enough on blogs unfortunately, most sites don’t work with them.
