A Friday Folly & A Friday Forum Reminder

by revgeorge on January 15, 2010

First, let’s start off with a folly.  A rumor has it that Robert Pattinson may take over the role of Marvel super-hero Spider-Man, which Tobey Maguire is vacating.  My gut response to that is “NO, NO, NO!!  Please God don’t let it be so!!!!” But that could just be an overreaction on my part; it is after all just a rumor for now. :)

Second, on to the forum.  Just a reminder that The Hogshead now has a forum.  We’re up to 42 registered members and over 70 topics.  Some of  the more recent topics and active ones are on Wandless Magic, A Topic for Strange Potter Questions, Books Read in 2010, Humor in Chamber of Secrets, Opera, and Should the Potter Movies Have Been Made, among many others.  Please feel free to check out the forum and get involved.

Aw – Revgeorge. Remember – he’s an actor. He didn’t write the film. Also – he’s a Harry Potter alum. He was Cedric. And a good Cedric at that. He was strong, handsome and seemed quite kind. I think he would be a fine Spiderman. It would also be an opportunity for him to show some color on his face. :-)

Never in a million years did I think Opera would be a hot topic. Either Harry Potter fans have exquisite taste – or we’re all a bunch of serious geeks.

What Joivre said: Pattinson is an actor. He didn’t write Twilight, he’s just doing his best to channel a 109 year old dirty old man with boyish good looks. It’s just a job. And the role will destroy his chances of a future acting career, unless he seeks other, very different parts asap. Not sure Spiderman is that, but at least it’s not Edward.

Joivre: given your two explanations for the appeal of opera on these pages, I’d go with the latter.

Oh, I don’t care that Pattinson was in Twilight. I haven’t watched those movies anyway. I just think he’s totally wrong for the part of Spider-Man. Especially if they kind of reboot the franchise. He’s way too old. Sure, Tobey Maguire was too old too but he looked young & geeky like Peter Parker should. Plus, it just ain’t right for a Brit to play Spider-Man. If JKR can say that only British actors can be in Harry Potter, then I say only an American can play Spider-Man! ;)

I just read that they’re taking Peter Parker back to high school in S4. Either actor is too old!

I thought that Peter Parker was in high school in the first Spiderman movie? Didn’t they just re-boot the series? Isn’t at bit to soon for a re-re-boot?

Arabella, I think you are right, they are both too old to play a high schooler.

Definitely way too soon for a reboot of the Spiderman series.

Hmm. I read an interview with Sam Ramie (sp?), I think in EW. I’ll have to check and put it here when I find it.

Well, I’d tossed out the EWs, but found this:

Yes, it’s too soon for a reboot, but they couldn’t get Spidey 4 to work at the script level, despite bringing in some of the top writers around. They were set to shoot in May, in pre-production now, and just laid off hundreds of people. Very sad.

And a reboot means a recasting. (Hmmm… Maybe they *wanted* to reboot for that reason…. Tobey M hasn’t been all peaches and cream to work with, so they say.)

Remember, the earliest a rebooted movie would hit theatres would be probably 2014. So, still early for a reboot, but not as bad as if it were this summer…

And I’m sure the reason Pattinson’s name is coming up is because Sony would love to nab all those “Team Edward” Twihards into *their* audience….

….Signing off from Hollywood….

Batman got a number of reboots and it didn’t hurt.

11 revgeorgeNo Gravatar January 15, 2010 at 10:22 pm

Yeah, you’d think they would at least have the courtesy to let George Clooney destroy Spider-Man first before rebooting it.

12 Arabella FiggNo Gravatar January 15, 2010 at 10:40 pm

George Clooney is too busy smoothly winning over the world in his own way to bother with an angsty acned atomic arachnid. ;-)

I know he is, but it was a reference to another franchise he’s been in which underwent a reboot after he played the lead role. :)

Joivre said, “Never in a million years did I think Opera would be a hot topic. Either Harry Potter fans have exquisite taste – or we’re all a bunch of serious geeks.”

Or it could be we’re both… :)

revgeorge — yeah, both is pretty much right… :)

I have to say, I think Pattison could pull off Spidey pretty well if they went that way. Anything to keep George Clooney from trying it, really. But then, I wouldn’t mind a completely different reboot, since, dare I say it, I was terribly disappointed in the current movies, even as someone who hasn’t read the originals!

But, hem hem, as has been noted, it’s an internet rumor. So that probably means they’re going to get no one at all like Pattison…Morgan Freeman or someone like that… :D

Or Clint Eastwood…
