Around the Common Room

by Travis Prinzi on October 24, 2008

First, the winner of the first October Giveaway is Red Rocker!  Congratulations, Red Rocker.  Send me an E-Owl, and I’ll get it shipped out to you right away.

Everyone stay tuned, because there’s going to be a second October giveaway coming up next week.  If you’ve not done so already, subscribe the Hog’s Head by RSS reader or daily email.

Other items of interest:

  • HogPro has been very active lately, which is always a treat for the serious reader of Harry Potter.  John Granger notes a recent statement by Rowling about the forthcoming Tales of Beedle the Bard (which you can pre-order by clicking here!) being a distillation of the themes of the Potter series.  I haven’t read the summaries yet, because I prefer to just read the stories when they’re available. But I intend to spend the majority of November and December focused on Faerie here, and analyzing the Tales will be a huge part of that.  Particularly interesting will be the things Rowling mentions about how “magic” in a fairy tale works in a world that is already magical.
  • Pete Peterson of The Rabbit Room (a blog I highly recommend) has written a scary story with admitted Lovecraftian influence.
  • Apparently, as with the 10th anniversary Sorcerer’s Stone, Melissa Anelli’s book, Harry, A History, has been shipped early.  Anyone have it?
  • Remember that our final week of Lovecraft stories is coming up, and we’re focusing on a great scary story – one of my favorites – “Haunter of the Dark.”  Amy will get us started at the beginning of the week with some intro questions, and I think she has a lengthy analysis planned!

My copy of Harry, A History arrived yesterday!

Got me excited, Travis, but I went to my amazon account and it still was waiting to ship. Also, I try to buy everything through the hog’s head bookstore, so hopefully, I’m doing my ordering correctly so that it supports the site.

Amy, i’m jealous!

I’m trying to follow along with Lovecraft, it’s just harder for me since I’m short on time and i don’t find it as interesting as other things discussed on this site. I’m looking forward to faerie stories!

Do you have additional release info on your book? Take care.

Brent, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your buying things through the Hog’s Head store. Yes, it helps a lot!

Lovecraft is a bigger time investment than Rowling, so being short on time makes it difficult! I’m short on time right now, too. I planned a lengthy Lovecraft post each week, as well as a podcast this month, but there just hasn’t been the time.

I’ve got two more chapters to edit on my book, which I’ll do this weekend, and my publisher is presently working on formatting the parts that I’ve completed. So, in effect, it’s “in production” right now, and I’ll have more info for you soon!

I got the new Anelli book yesterday. Already up to midway of Chapter 4. There are 17 chapters plus a foreword by Jo & the book also has an epilogue. The main failing I see so far is there is no index. I love indexes.

You can follow my ramblings about my read through the book over at Hogwarts Professor. Although I probably won’t get too much reading done today. I should really make some shut in visits & get my flu shot so it has time to take effect before I get on a plane here in two weeks or so.

Congratulations, Red Rocker, on winning the giveaway! It really is a cute book.

Happy to win the book. What’s the reading-age level, does anyone know?

Just read The Haunter of the Dark This time, when the protagonist looks into the abyss, the abyss looks back.

Chilling.

Hey Travis, Hearing a bit about your long process of writing your book makes me nervous, as Dave just sent off the contract to Harper. Yikes! What has he gotten himself into?! Congratulations on being almost done with yours – what an accomplishment.

Rocker, I couldn’t find an age level listed on the Amazon page for this book. But it probably is around the same level of Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are.” It might take a little explaining to a child as to what might be going on. But you’ll be able to tell more when you get the book.

I got my copy of Anelli’s book yesterday, but I only got through J.K. Rowling’s Preface and will read more later. By then revgeorge will have finished the book. :)

Congratulations Red Rocker on winning the giveaway. :)

Ah Johnny, I didn’t get any reading done on Anelli’s book yesterday, so I’m still in the middle of chapter 4. Actually I spent last night reading a piece of fan fiction.

So, you have a good chance of catching me up. :)

In regard to Anelli’s book “Harry, A History,” I finished the book tonight & posted some comments over on the thread at Hogpro’s about my reactions to it. Don’t know when they’ll clear moderation since John is out of town but if you’re interested in my opinions of the book, they should be on there sometime.

Looking forward to your thoughts over there,

I think UPS lost my book, amazon said it’s been shipping for nearly a week.

After over there, should read ” revgeorge”, I tried to bold his name, but I’m not good at all with HTML

Brent, I keep getting more and more confused all the time about how publications are released nowadays. I got my book almost three weeks ago but I read on Leaky yesterday or the day before that the ‘official’ publication date was only two days ago! Does that mean it wasn’t available in store till that date but available online or what? I can’t figure it out.

Anyway, my comments did post over at Hogpro’s.
