Around the Common Room

by Travis Prinzi on December 19, 2008

Christmas is quickly approaching. I still have shopping to do. And, we’re getting a puppy.  Meet Moses.

Several things are on deck here at The Hog’s Head. This weekend, I’ll record a podcast and have it posted by Sunday. There will also be an extended post on Christmas, fairy tales, and Harry Potter early next week.

Don’t forget to enter the contest for a free copy of Harry Potter & Imagination – deadline is tonight!

Forthcoming both here at at The Rabbit Room are reviews of Twilight. Andrew Osenga has written a review for The Rabbit Room which will be amusing to folks who didn’t like the book.

Amy Sturgis is up for some awards, so go vote for her!

A Lovecraft Christmas

“The Christmas Child,” by George MacDonald

“Little one, who straight has come
Down the heavenly stair,
Tell us all about your home
And the Father there.”

“He is such a one as I -
Like as like can be.
Do his will, and, by and by,
Home and him you’ll see.”

Moses is precious! I love dogs of all kinds, and I hope you’ll be posting more pictures of this sweetheart.

Thanks so much for the shout out! I appreciate your support!

Not sure if you named Moses intentionally for St. Moses the Black (puppy-Moses’ black coat brought the association to mind), but in case you didn’t check out the life of St. Moses the Black (alternately called St. Moses the Ethiopian):

I like the story of Black Moses. It sounds like it would make a good movie, especially the parts where he can’t quite purge himself of his “passions” – makes you wonder which passions were most particularly troublesome – the part where the entire band repents and joins him in the monastary, and of course, the Alamo-like ending.

Travis why did you call the puppy Moses?

Because Tricia wanted to call him “Moose,” and I didn’t like that, so she shifted to “Moses,” and we both liked it.

I didn’t know anything about Black Moses before Donna posted, but I’m glad she did!

I have a black cat (about 11 years old) whose name is Moses. He was the first to be born of the litter – so he was named Moses because he led his brothers and sisters out of captivity.

No cats named Moses, but I have ones named Athanasius, Brittanicus, Olympia, Octavian, & Bonaventure. The others are more conventionally named but then my wife named those ones. :)

revgeorge, how many cats do you have? :)

revgeorgeNo Gravatar December 22, 2008 at 12:45 pm

Leanne,

I have thirteen cats right now. All indoors ones & spayed or neutered. We unfortunately had to have one put to sleep this past September because she had gone downhill fast after being diagnosed with feline leukemia. Otherwise, we’d still be at fourteen. Between my wife & I our house is basically full of books & cats. Not much room for anything else. :)

revgeorge: Wow! The max we ever had was three (well, four if you counted the one that lived in the basement), and I thought that was pushing it. Ours are Siamese, and they are loud little buggers. Everytime one dies – and they do with heartbreaking frequency, not being a particularly robust breed – I swear to myself: no more. But then we see an ad for a new litter of lilac points or lilac lynx, and we’re off again.
