B.J. Harrison’s Classic Books

by Travis Prinzi on April 29, 2009

My favorite podcast is The Classic Tales, with B.J. Harrison.  For those of you who love audiobooks, great news: B.J. has started The Classic Novels podcast!  This is not a free one, like The Classic Tales, but it does mean you’ll get professional audiobooks for a great price.

The books will be released episodically, and the first episode of Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, is available!

Perfect timing for me, since I’ve just finished up an audiobook production of Dracula. Harrison’s great novels podcast is next on my list!

It sounds great but…is he still using evil DRM technology? I won’t buy his Classic Tales podcasts off of Audible because I can’t use them on Linux nor can I load them on my mp3 player of choice. As much as I love B.J.’s work I’m not buying an expensive player just to listen to them.

revgeorge, I’m not sure. I’ve already got the expensive mp3 player, so it doesn’t affect me.

His “A Christmas Carol” was the best! I wish it was still available on itunes. I wrote him a “thank you” email and received a lovely reply. His mama raised him right! :-)

Yeah, B.J.’s a really good guy. We’ve been trying to make our schedules line up to do an interview on the Hog’s Head PubCast.

The Great Expectations podcast is generated using the same programs I use to create the Classic Tales Podcast. I am under an exclusivity contract with Audible, so I can’t sell the archived episodes anywhere except Audible and the iTunes music store. At the time, it was quite a breakthrough, but I have had reason to regret the move since.

But if the CT podcast and feed work for you, the Great Expectations podcast should work just fine, as well.

Thanks for all your enthusiasm! It makes it all worthwhile!

B.J., thank you for the post. Hopefully you understood that when I said DRM is evil, I don’t mean you are evil. I can certainly understand how it would affect you through the various music services, which do use it & haven’t done away with it yet.

More often than not, DRM has kept me from buying something instead of buying it. Plus, DRM doesn’t really work at protecting files. If I had a little more techno savvy & wanted to spend the time & effort & didn’t care about breaking the law I could strip the DRM off of Audible files. Off of any proprietary file format, really.

Anyway, I’ve just learned to save the regular mp3 files from The Classic Tales when they download in my pod catcher. If I subscribed to The Classic Novels feed, would the files download as mp3’s or as .aa audible files? If it’s mp3, then I would subscribe.

I do very much love the work you do on these podcasts. You have such a way of bringing the stories alive with your voice.

They would download as mp3 files. Incidentally, I’m also a fan of owning what I purchase, and being able to do what I want with it. I don’t know, I’m just funny that way.

Thanks for the comps! We’ll keep doin’ what we’re doin’!

Harriet Beecher Stowe on the CT podcast tomorrow. Better go edit.

Listening to the Great Expectations Podcast, the Christmas Dinner that is in Chapter 4, it reminds me of the Dinner in Harry Potter; Prisoner of Azkaban, when Harry Potter’s Aunt came, and was comparing the young, and how their personalities, from their mother’s. But in GE, the visitors are talking about Pig’s and Pork.

Rollin, just listened to that today, and I had the exact same thought. The other thing in the first few chapters that reminded me very much of Harry Potter was Pip’s sister’s constantly prohibiting him from asking any questions.
