Just some reminders for this Monday afternoon.  First, remember The Hogshead now has a forum available for even more discussion on things Potter and whatever else you want to talk about.  We just reached 50 members.  Congrats to mrmathman for being the 50th member!!  If you haven’t joined yet, feel free to check out the forum and join in the conversations.

Relief efforts for Haiti are continuing.  Just a reminder that The Harry Potter Alliance, in conjunction with many other HP fandom sites, is continuing its Helping Haiti Heal campaign.  By donating to their campaign you earn various entries for drawings of items that have been donated by various people and organizations.  JK Rowling has donated a full British edition set of the HP books plus a handwritten note of thanks.  To earn a chance for that gift, a donation of $100 is asked.  Lots of other items at various levels of giving are available, including several books donated by our own Travis Prinzi.  The proceeds go to support the organization Partners in Health.  Donations are open until January 30th at 11:59PM.  If you’re so inclined check out this opportunity to help out the people of Haiti.  This drive raised over $33,000 in under six hours on Saturday, but I’m sure they could use more.

In other efforts for Haiti, DriveThruRPG is offering a fantastic deal for people who enjoy role-playing games.  Through January 31st, if you donate $20, which will go to Doctors Without Borders, you will get over a $1000 in role-playing games and supplements in pdf format.  You can also donate $5 or $10 amounts which will be matched.  So far, they’ve raised over $130,000.  I’m downloading all my pdf’s even as I write.

A few days ago, someone from the Orlando Sentinel provided some photos they took at the Universal Themepark showing the construction of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. If you picked up the Blu Ray of Half-Blood Prince, then you saw the special in the extras section that was mostly a CGI tour of the park’s layout, along with the actors talking about what they had seen so far.

These photos don’t show too much, but they hint at just how much the park is influenced by the look of the movies (no big surprise). I’m eagerly awaiting some more detail on just what is in store in terms of rides and attractions. If I get to take on a dragon, or see a giant sphinx, I’ll be happy ;) .

According to some calculations, when the clock ticks over midnight tonight, a new decade will begin and the old one close.  Not for me, though, I don’t think the new decade starts until 2011.  :)

But since most of the world figures 2010 will start the new decade, I’ve noticed a fair number of stories posted over at The Leaky Cauldron on Harry Potter and its place in the last decade.  That is to say, Harry Potter is making a lot of end of decade lists.  I was going to post the links to some of those stories but Leaky is apparently down for maintainence right now.  Oh well.  Anyway, if you go over there once they’re back up, you’ll see over the last week or so many of these stories.

My question to you all this New Year’s Eve is, what do you think Harry Potter’s role and place was in the last decade?  What do you think it will be in the decade to come?  How do you measure the impact of both Harry Potter and of Joanne Rowling at this time in history?

So, have yourself some hors d’ouevres, raise a toast of champagne, and sing a round of Auld Lang Syne, and have a Happy New Year!!

Saw this story over at The Leaky Cauldron today.  Eight years ago this month the first Potter movie came out.  In the story Chris Columbus, the director of the first two movies, looks back at the casting of the Trio and also how far they’ve come both as actors and as young adults.  Two other items of note: One, Columbus is directing the new movie based off of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series; two, in December ultimate DVD editions of the first two Potter movies will be released.

This article (9-21-09) (click here) details the prominent attractions and rides “to make the experience immersive.”

“Along those journeys they’re going to be swept up into the greatest parts of the movies and the books,” says Paul Daurio, producer of the Potter area. “We’ve pushed every technology available to us to give tuests a theme park experience unlike any they’ve had before.”

I found interesting this quote, in the light of Harry Potter being Shared Text:

“It’s such a huge worldwide brand, and the only place in the world you’re going to be able to experience it is in Orlando.”

The L.A. Times reports that Ron Howard will begin work on The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft.  It appears that the movie will be based on the series of comics from Image.

“It very cleverly uses H.P. Lovecraft in a fictional way, but there’s some loose biographical elements. But it certainly has the flavor and the tone of Lovecraft…The character is a very young Lovecraft…  Look, it’s challenging, but if we get it right, it could be really original and psychologically interesting and scary in a great way. And it’s a graphic novel, this is new territory for me.”

Sounds interesting.

A website called “Literacy News” poses the following question:

Anyone think that the generation raise on Harry Potter will eventual segue into real literature, or is the written word as we know it doomed as lightening scarred step-child of the internet?

The comments are just as good. Or bad. However you’re looking at it.
