Deathly Hallows Casting “News”: Rufus Scrimgeour

by Dave the Longwinded on July 1, 2009

We haven’t talked at length about some of the characters that we would meet in the DH films.  I personally can’t help but wonder who will play the wonderfully delirious Xenophilius Lovegood (assuming they leave him in the script…).

But, a little news/rumor found its way to IGN today concerning the casting of Rufus Scrimgeour.  It seems as though Bill Nighy might be taking up the scowling minister’s robes.  Lately, he’s best known for his turn as Davey Jones in the last two Pirates of the Caribbean movies.  And uber-dedicated sci fi/fantasy nerds will recognize him from the Underworld movies (which, IMO, suck…).

His resume is long and varied.  He’s a very versatile actor, and recently he’s been in everything from the hilarious British film Hot Fuzz to The Constant Gardener to Valkyrie (outshining Tom Cruise by a mile — you know, like it’s difficult or something…).

I think his choice is interesting, and it is potentially a quiet but very definitive home run.  But, it’s also got me to thinking about who might play some of the other characters that haven’t made it on screen yet.  Or, for that matter, which ones might be cut in the name of filmic-adaption.

Thoughts?  Ideas?

Xenophilius is going to be played by Rhys Ifans.

Victoria, Ahhhh….! I hadn’t heard that one. I’m not familiar with the guy, but he certainly looks the part.

Thank you for clearing that up!

Coincidentally, I just watched the first Underworld movie last night, and I’m picking up the second when I return this one in 20 minutes. I liked the first one alright – some interesting themes and techniques that fit along with Potter stuff.

I have always pictured him as Scrimgeour. Perfect.

I gather Scrimgeour was cut from HBP?

Perfect looks for Scrimgeour and good actor–home run!

Rhys Ifan, I think, played Hugh Grant’s screwy roomate in Notting Hill. He should do flaky just fine.

Who will play Elphias Doge, Aunt Muriel and Bathilda Bagshot? I’d love to see Meryl Streep as one of the women and she could do it, too. But keeping British, how about Vanessa Redgrave, Helen Mirren or Diana Rigg as A.M. or B.B., and Michael Caine or Albert Finney as Doge?

Right – that’s who Rhys Ifan is! Excellent choice. I hadn’t thought of him, but I think he’ll do quite well with the part.

I like this actor. Unfortunately, he probably isn’t going to get much screen time.

Arabella, I love Michael Caine! But, for some odd reason, Albert Finney seems to work better as Elphias Doge to me.

What about Judi Dench? Age up Cate Blanchett. Or really have a blast–Hayley Mills.

I agree with Vanessa Redgrave, but this for Bathilda Bagshot. Remember she played the narrator in Atonement, who was an author? I think she would have the feel of the part down cold. Or Helen Mirren. Wouldn’t that be fun?

But I see Lynn Redgrave as Auntie Muriel. If you’ve ever seen the Jane Austen Book Club, she plays the alcoholic/smoking mother to Prudie. Anyway, I just really remember that performance. And check out her red hair at imdb.com!

For Elphias Doge? Ian McKellen. Besides being a fun performance, I think it would be a great movie joke that “Gandalf” was so inspired by “Dumbledore.” :)

One can only hope they pull a George Lucas & go back in a digitally remaster the HP series replacing a certain actor with Ian McKellen. :)

“and” digitally remaster is what I meant to say.

Judi Dench as Aunt Muriel is perfect. And can’t we fit Pierce Brosnan in somewhere, anywhere? Make him a dangerously handsome Death Eater or something?

He could be Runcorn, the guy Harry impersonates at the Ministry.
