Fantasy Author David Eddings has died

by korg20000bc on June 4, 2009

eddings01David Eddings, author of The Belgariad, The Mallorean and a string of other fantasy series has died at age 77.

I have read most of his works multiple times.  His characters seemed to have a life of their own in my head and I’d enjoy going back to visit them again every so often.

Polgara, Belgarath, Garion, Durnik, Barak, Silk, Mandorellen are great characters whose exploits I avidly followed.

Thank you Mr Eddings for all the enjoyment I got form your stories.

I saw that yesterday he had died.

I never really liked The Belgariad. Read it once or twice. And I don’t think I ever read The Mallorean.

But I do love The Elenium & also like the follow up to that, The Tamuli. Must be the idea of Church Knights kicking a** in a righteous cause. :)

I had the exact opposite reaction to Revgeorge – I loved all ten Garion books and have read them ridiculous numbers of times although I couldn’t get past the first one of the Elenium. David Eddings will be missed!

I haven’t had the pleasure of reading any of David Eddings books.
You all can help me decide where to start by looking through the list and summaries I picked out these two, The Rivan Codex and the Pawn of Prophecy, or should I just start back at the beginning? thanks for you help. http://www.eddingschronicles.com/index.html

Robert, I never read The Rivan Codex so I could only recommend Pawn of Prophecy. I should amend my statement above to say that I liked The Belgariad well enough when I read it; it was just never something that hooked me & so I haven’t read it in years. But it’s not like it was a bad series or anything like that.

Robert,
Go with Pawn of Prophecy, and the following 4 books, for sure.

revgeorge,
I don’t mind the Elenium but by the end I was thinking that the knights were just a bunch of church-sponsored bullies and thugs. They weren’t much better than the guys they were fighting. Some good characters though.

Matthew, of course, they’re better than the guys they’re fighting. They’re CHURCH knights! They must be good. ;)

I think what distinguished the The Belgariad from The Elenium for me is the characters. I never really liked or cared for the characters all that much in The Belgariad. They just didn’t do much for me. So while it was an okay story to read once or twice it just never stuck with me.

That photo of Eddings…

To be taken seriously as a fantasy writer do you need to pose with a pipe in hand or mouth or what?

Neat essay by one Phil Webb on why he smokes a pipe. Lewis gets mentioned:

Nice little jab at lawyers.
