Happy Birthday, Professor Tolkien!

by Kris Swank on January 3, 2013

January 3, 2013 would be J.R.R. Tolkien’s 121st birthday — his “twelfty-first” in the slang of The Shire. Lots of folks are celebrating.

The Huffington Post has collected a list of their favorite Tolkien quotes, as has the Christian Science Monitor.

Blogger Curtis Weyant raises “A Toast to Tollers”, referring to the professor’s nickname among the Inklings literary group. You can leave your own toast to Tolkien, or read those left by others at the Tolkien Society.

The Tolkien Society is also encouraging the public to read his 1937 book The Hobbit in honor of the Professor’s birthday and Peter Jackson’s recent film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

I plan to raise a bottle of Samuel Adams in his honor tonight & start reading Farmer Giles of Ham since I reread The Hobbit quite recently.
