I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve. We had bad weather, so we stayed in for a peaceful evening with pints of Ben & Jerry’s and a movie.
Several items of interest for Hog’s Head patrons:
- Added: Journey to the Sea, Issue 7 is up, and it includes an interview with Tolkien illustrator Ted Nasmith.
- If you haven’t signed up for Azkatraz, you really should. I’ll keep you posted on why.
- HP Progs episode #96 is up!
- Mr. Granger continues his discussion of The Secret Garden (which I’m wishing I’d read, so I could participate)
- Also, the conversation around Twilight got even more interesting when Mr. Granger proposed that we might be enjoying the Twilight-beatdown a little too much.
I’ll be blogging through portions of Rolland Hein’s Christian Mythmakers as I read it. Thanks to Hog’s Head patron Leanne for sending me a copy! I can’t believe I’d never read this before.

Happy New Year!!
Have already registered for Azkatraz & have a ticket for the HBP movie. Still trying to decide on whether to go on the Wrock Cruise around Alcatraz.
Got my annotated copy of The Secret Garden yesterday. Unfortunately, John pointed out that the annotations don’t help much. Don’t know when I’ll get time to reread it.
I think we can put the Twilight beatdown into a positive light. The fact that some people love the series & the fact that some people dislike it so much shows that the series works on different levels.
To end on an upbeat & a slight tie in to your discussion on prophecy in HPI, here’s a quote from The Hobbit, a book that always moves me when I read it.
“Then the prophecies of the old songs have turned out to be true, after a fashion!” said Bilbo.
“Of course!” said Gandalf. “And why should not they prove true? Surely you don’t disbelieve the prophecies, because you had a hand in bringing them about yourself? You don’t really suppose, do you, that all your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck, just for your sole benefit? You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I am very fond of you; but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all!”
“Thank goodness!” said Bilbo laughing, and handed him the tobacco-jar.
I’ll be presenting at Azkatraz. I’ve got my movie ticket, and am looking forward to it.
Yay! I’m glad you’re enjoying the book, Travis. It is a great one. Enjoy, and happy new year!
Denise, curious – have you actually heard back from them about presenting? I thought the deadline was the end of this month.
I submitted my proposals today.
Happy New Year, Travis!
I’m planning to re-read HBP this year with your commentary in mind and see if I have a different impression of the Harry/Dumbledore collaboration. ( I had my ‘teacher’ and ‘he’ll get sued lenses’ on in the first reading). I’ll try to read it as a ‘civilian.’
Congratulations on the publication of your book!
Well you could always read The Secret Garden on classicreader.com
And it would only take three or four hours. Maybe a bit longer if you actually wanted to enjoy the read. And you’re going to have to get it for Sophie at some point. And parts of it are quite delighful, theosophy notwithstanding. Here’s a bit to get you started:
Living as it were, all by herself in a house with a hundred mysteriously closed rooms and having nothing whatever to do to amuse herself, had set her inactive brain to working and was actually awakening her imagination.
Travis:
Yes I’ve already heard back from them. I submitted a proposal in November, and I got the news about a month later.
Ah, right – the early decision date. Excellent! I will most definitely be there, and of course I’m hoping they accept a few of my proposals.
What’s your topic this year?
