Headin’ North

by Travis Prinzi on June 19, 2008

I would travel all my life
If loneliness was not the price
But headin’ north across that line
Is the only time I’m flyin’

~ Gordon Lightfoot

Very early tomorrow morning, I’ll start the trip up across the good ol’ U.S./Canada border and on to Ottawa.  Trips up to Canada have been a very regular part of my life, but I’ve never been to Ottawa before.  (Anyone who has can feel free to tell me what not to miss while I’m there!)  Hockey tournaments, Gordon Lightfoot shows at Massey Hall in Toronto, Prophecy 2007, and trips just for fun have all called me north, and this time, I get to spend a weekend with my good friend and Hogwarts Professor, John Granger, reveling in the freedom to let all my Geekery out.  As long as I have internet access there, I’ll be writing blog posts and tweeting; I’ll definitely be recording a podcast over the weekend.

My listening plans for the trip: Audiobook of A Short History of Myth, by Karen Armstrong

A quick news item: Several recent rumors have been debunked, including the one about Rowling writing a script for a new Harry Potter mini-movie exclusively for the theme park.

Travis,

All the best for safe travels and a great time up there in Canada.
I had the pleasure of listening and learning from you on the subject of ‘Fawkes’ and meaning of the Pheonix within Harry’s journey at Prophecy2007 in Toronto last year.

I will be joining up with you in Dallas this summer at Portus and will be presenting a roundtable, “Harry Potter and the Bridge between two Worldviews”, looking into the connections within ‘Deathly Hallows’ between the symbolism used by both J K Rowling and the writings of C S Lewis.

Congratulations on serving as a Keynote speaker up there along side good friend John Granger. Both of you have been a great help and inspiration to this ‘Christian Apologist’ in studying the merits and symbolism in Harry Potter.

Knock ‘em out in Ottawa!

I’ve heard that John Granger is a Hell-bunkmate. The word around here is that his after seminar antics and Captain Kirk impressions are shocking. I hope you’ve got your earplugs handy.

Keep us posted.

David, thanks for your note and your encouragement! I’m looking forward to meeting you in Dallas, and I hope the schedule works out so I can make it to your roundtable! Sounds like a great topic which will dovetail nicely with my presentation, “Christ in the Forest: Aslan and Harry Walk to their Deaths” (which I think is in the afternoon on Saturday).

Matthew, will definitely keep you posted! Unless, for some reason, I can’t access the wifi there…then it might get difficult.

Keeping my promise to keep you posted: Granger’s no Shatner, to be sure.

Actually, John Granger is a terrible roommate only if you get annoyed by late-night intelligent literary conversation and debate. Since I don’t, it worked out perfectly, and I’m guessing we’ll do the same for the Northern Illinois University conference this October.

That’s… disappointing.

I thought you might come back with college tales of crashing Lambda Lambda Lambda’s frat house, breaking into the dean’s office to change records and accidently breaking his mother’s ashes urn, beating the jocks at the inter-fratenity games and winning a place on the great council.

Did you miss out or what?!
