Responding to Berit Kjos

by Behold a Phoenix on September 29, 2007

by Johnny

Berit Kjos, one of the most staunch opponents of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, reveals her gross misunderstanding of Deathly Hallows in her review, “Harry’s Last Battle & Rowling’s Beliefs“. Concentrating on the Vancouver Sun quotation where JKR told Max Wyman that if she discussed her faith then the “intelligent reader, whether 10 or 60, will be able to guess what’s coming in the books”; Kjos comes to the following conclusion about the novel’s climactic ending where Harry sacrifices himself and later comes back to defeat Voldemort: [click to continue…]

It’s been one week since the release of Deathly Hallows, and there’s still so much to process. I think we’ve gotten off to a fairly good start here at SoG, and other sites have done so as well (there are now 25 topics of discussion running simultaneously at HogPro). I have much more that I want to write, and I do want to get to podcasting as soon as possible; Prophecy 2007 preparations have to come first, however.

This “Around the Common Room” celebrates the first week of celebrating and mourning the end of the series. First, your regular list of new links to check. Then, a summary list of the SoG posts from this week, just in case you’re finally finishing up Deathly Hallows and want to know where the discussion’s at!

Upcoming Essays at SoG, which may have to wait until post-Prophecy 2007. [click to continue…]

hogshead.jpgWhy Laura Mallory doesn’t represent the Christian point of view; an all-out rant on her crusade against Potter; my plans for the Book 7 release; Owl Post

To my readers who don’t/can’t get the podcast: I do sincerely apologize for not getting transcripts of these. I am simply just too short on time. I’m working two jobs, part time school, blah blah…you don’t want to hear my list. Anyway, I apologize, and I very much hope to get back to regular writing as soon as possible, and hopefully will include transcripts or at least summaries of the podcasts.

I need myself a good staff of podcast elves or something…

No, I’m not linking the Laura Mallory site. Go find it yourself. Or better yet, don’t. Avoid it altogether.

She’s Back…

by Travis Prinzi 01.19.2007

Laura Mallory is appealing the decision.
Laura Mallory, who has three children in elementary school, said she has requested an appeal of her case to Superior Court….Mallory said she’s ready for a legal fight. She said she’s already contacted a potential expert witness to lend support to her case. And she said supporters who urged her [...]

Around the Common Room

by Travis Prinzi 12.19.2006

A video with part of an interview with Laura Mallory, challenger of the Harry Potter novels in Georgia.  (HT to commenter Ben).  Fascinating…she managed to irritate me in no less than 2 minutes worth of sound bytes.
Rowling says we’re not hearing any updates from her because she’s hard at work on Book 7.   Yes, [...]

Georgia Vote Today

by Travis Prinzi 12.14.2006

Update #3: It’s just getting uglier. If the story is correct, Laura Mallory is considering taking her complaint to court. What could she possibly hope to accomplish in court?
Update #2: It might not be over. There’s talk of an appeal. I might stop covering this story just to protect my [...]

Rowling on the “Witchcraft” Controversy

by Travis Prinzi 10.06.2006

In light of the recent national publicity of Laura Mallory’s case against Harry Potter, I think revisiting Rowling’s words from this interview from July 2000 would be quite appropriate:
Q: Do you believe in witchcraft and have you ever done any witchcraft ?
JKR: No.
Q: What are your feelings towards the people who say your books are [...]
