James McAvoy as Bilbo?

That appears to be the strongest rumor:

James McAvoy is set to play Bilbo Baggins in ‘The Hobbit’.

Film bosses are rumoured to be close to signing McAvoy – who played the faun Mr. Tumnus in ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe’ – to play the fantasy hero in the big screen adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s book.

Thoughts?  Sounds like a good choice to me.

Very excellent choice. I thought he was one of the best things about LWW (next to Tilda Swinton’s White Witch).

His gentle, diffident manner and his eventual heroism as Mr. Tumnus is just the thing for Bilbo as well.

I just read the article. McAvoy was their first choice. Daniel Radcliffe and Jack Black were other options.

Not sure about Radcliffe. He’s too young, for one. But besides that, he’s too complicated. Bilbo is a fairly straightforward character (until the Ring gets to him).

Jack Black? Way too much force of personality for Bilbo. I can see him as Beorn.

Radcliffe? Surely his career is basically finished once the Harry Potter movies are completed. He’s a kid who looked like Harry but he ain’t no actor.

Interestingly enough, I always like the character of Mr. Tumnus, but somehow seeing it played out on the big screen rather gave me the creeps. I couldn’t tell if it was McAvoy or just the visualization of it. I’ve seen him in other things, and he’s fine, but I’m not sure I can picture him as Bilbo.

As for Radcliffe, I think he’s way too young for the part. But I don’t think his career is finished once Harry Potter is done. I’ve seen him in a few other movies, and he’s OK. December Boys was good and he was good in My Boy Jack.

Oh, and please, not Jack Black, though he looks more like a hobbit than the other two.

I absolutely agree with Eeyore, I liked Radcliffe a lot in December Boys and I’ve heard he does a wonderful Alan Strang (and no that was my brother-in-law saying that not a Radcliffe fan girl :) ). My boy Jack I would have to see again. That was the first non-Potter performance I saw and my brain sometimes still expected him to expelliarmus someone…
