Just a reminder that MythCon 39 is this upcoming weekend (August 15-18) in New Britain, CT. Sadly, despite the fact that I’ll actually be in CT this weekend, I’ll not be able to attend. But the conference looks great, and the rates are excellent for a conference from such a great organization. There are also excellent day-pass rates ($20/day for Friday and Monday, $30/day for Saturday and Sunday). If you’re able to go, I’d highly recommend it.
If you’re a Hog’s Head patron, and you’re going to MythCon, please do come back to this post and give us updates in the comments section.

I live just 22 miles from where the convention is being held, so I signed up for the conference (and to sell books at a “dealers table.”) The demographics of the attendees are interesting. Very few of what I would consider “young people,” – - ages 20-40. Most seem to be 50-60 year-old throwbacks to the sixties (can you say “elvendorks?)” And the majority seem to know Tolkien backwards and forwards. There is a planetarium at the college campus and tonight a Tolkien/Astronomy teacher gave us a lively and funny “show” of the stars and planets as named and mythologized by Tolkien for his imaginary world. The presenter said something I didn’t understand at the end and the room began to recite some (apparently) famous poem by Tolkien with the same certainty as you might recite the pledge of allegiance. Spooky. But the people are very nice and I met a few people I knew. There are only a handful of talks that are in my particular areas of interest. And you can be sure I won’t be attending the moon-drumming event on Saturday night. Still, as Travis says, the day rates are reasonable – - -so if you have a chance one of these days consider attending. I think it’s at UCLA next year.
