I start a Mythology class next week. We got access to our assignments today, and my first assignment is to describe myth and then to identify the elements of a modern myth. I, of course, will be selecting Harry Potter, so you can expect to read some of my coursework in the near future.
Speaking of Harry Potter and education, a school will be adding the first novel to its regular coursework for high school students. This is a great idea. I think the Harry Potter novels are a door to a lot of great literature as well as being great lit themselves, and hopefully this move will inspire lots of young folks to rediscover reading.

A mythology class: cool! Is it part of a degree program, or just a stand-alone class? Also, are you planning to go to Lumos 2006?
LaShawn, as of now, it’s a stand alone class. But my wife and I have been talking about what I should be when I grow up (it’s kinda weird not knowing that when you’re almost 27), and I’m really leaning toward a career in teaching English and literature. So it may turn into a program soon.
My wife is due July 16 (our first baby!), so I won’t be making it to Lumos, unfortunately. Are you going?
Yeah – I’ll be there as a member of the press and as a fan. We’ll meet at the next one.
Travis,
Congratulations on your upcoming delivery – a different kind of “Lumos”! Get as a much sleep as you can in the next six months!
I wish I could be at Lumos 2006, too, but as a wife and mom who also works part-time and lives in the East, there’s no way. I’m just grateful I get to read your and LaShawn’s blogs. Maybe someday in the future I’ll be able to find my way back into an academic classroom. I’m such a nerd, I really miss it. I will be interested in your mythology posts.
Travis, you should pull a Barty Crouch, Jr., lock the mythology teacher up and teach the class yourself.
