We’ve spent a lot of time on this site going round and round the theories about Book 7, especially in the comments sections here and here. When I began Book 7 speculation, I was quick to use this disclaimer:
I tend to think that predicting what will happen in the final book is one of the most fruitless endeavors, albeit interesting. JKR is just too good at the surprise plot turns and endings.
I want to investigate that a bit more by referring to some excellent stuff from John Granger’s article “Why Half-Blood Prince is the Best Harry Potter Novel.” The reason speculation is so difficult is because J.K. Rowling employs the “third person, limited omniscient” voice throughout the novels. The “third person” is almost always Harry, about whom we all feel very strongly. We’re all cheering for Harry, in other words. By telling us only part of the story but not really making it sound that way, she employs a technique called “narrative misdirection.”
Here, I’ll let John explain it for you:
All “narrative misdirection†amounts to really is our being suckered into believing, because the story is not being told by Harry himself, that we are seeing the story as God sees it. Of course this isn’t the case but over the course of the tale our looking down on Harry and friends (and enemies) from “on highâ€, even if “on high†means only from a few feet over Harry’s head, we begin to think we have a larger perspective than we do.
This trick works because we like Harry and sympathize with him and his struggles. In short, we begin to identify with how Harry thinks and feels, and, because Harry is not telling the story, we think we have to this position of sympathy and identification with the hero because of our unprejudiced view.
When you’ve arrived at this position – and, confess, we’ve all been there, this woman is really good at what she’s doing – Ms. Rowling has you wrapped up. She can take you anywhere she wants to take you and make you think almost anything she wants about any character because, by and large, what Harry thinks is what we believe.
Think of Philospher’s Stone. We’re all convinced Snape is the bad guy, until the surprise ending when Quirrell is standing in front of the mirror. Or Chamber of Secrets: Tom Riddle seemed like such a nice guy in the diary. Or Prisoner of Azkaban: Who didn’t think Sirius was out to kill Harry? You see what I’m getting at.
JKR is so good at this, she has us guessing in about a hundred different directions about even the most important issues of the books (horcruxes, for example). I’ve come to lean heavily towards the horcrux scar-as-horcrux theory, but who knows if she’s just sending me in the wrong direction?
So let me add one more disclaimer to all the theories I propose and urge you to do the same: I’m probably wrong about every guess and theory I’ve got. And I certainly don’t want to be married to any particular theory, because my hunch is that if I go into Book 7 expecting a certain thing to happen, thinking I’ve got it all figured out, I’ll not enjoy the book quite as much. Let’s have fun with the theories, but better to let her storytelling be what it is, rather than what we’ve theorized it to be, when Book 7 arrives.

That is why I like to play devil’s advocate sometimes, showing people that things aren’t as closed book as they sometimes make it seem. The possibilities ARE endless like you say, but that is part of what makes speculating so much fun. Our immaginations run wild! I’m not sure that ANY of us have stayed the course in every single theory though, so don’t feel singled out. I will certainly add myself to the list of disclaimer supporters though, if it hasn’t already been made clear to everyone thus far.
As for your observation that reading the last book may be disapointing for you (as well as possibly others)if things get carried away with on the speculation aspect, I am sorry you feel that way. Though this concern is well founded, I feel it less likely concidering you are talking about a bunch of avid fans here. I also think JKR is too good an author to let that happen. I certainly don’t want to do anything that may contribute to that however. So, I’m afraid I need you to clarify the second addendum to your eloquent disclaimer, if you don’t mind. Do you want us not to debate things anymore, or just not get carried away with it? Or, is it the speculations about what WILL happen in the last installment that you would like quailed or lessened?
I would like to note that because of all the fine detective work involved in commenting/debating, it is also true that we are weeding out missunderstandings, erronious details and the like. This is good, as it will help us understand the final book all the better. I personally like this sort of brainstorming mentality. It strengthens my observation skills. I will, however, respect your wishes since this is your site. I love what you have done with it and I in no way want to recreate it in anyway contrary to your liking. I appologize too, for any irritation I may have personally caused you. That certainly wasn’t my intention. You have been nothing short of an eye opener to me, and I appreciate that. Thanks!
Deborah, goodness, no, that’s not what I meant. Keep the speculations and theories coming. I think the debate is great. The post was more of a caution to myself than anyone else. I am quite certain that I’ll not be disappointed at all with Book 7. The only problem is that I tend to get really excited about theories and defending them, and if I go into book 7 hoping that my theories come true (especially since I’ve broadcasted them publicly to over 5,000 unique readers per month), I’ll be distracted from enjoying it to the fullest.
Your contributions have been great here. Keep them coming, for sure. In fact, I added the plugin on the right because I wanted the horcrux theory posts highlighted so everyone knew they were happening and could join in.
I’m hoping I don’t ruin the book for myself or others.
It took me along time to go in search out the Harry Potter sites, and it took me even longer to post my first theory.
I have a tendency to guess endings in movies, and I’ve ruined several movies that way. But when I find a movie that surprises me, I love it. I have hope that JK will surprise me. The truth is I don’t think JK has given us all the pieces of the puzzle. A good write doesn’t. They give us just enough of the edges, to tease us, and then “wham†they slam down the center and we see how it all fits together.
