Order Trailer and Video

by Travis Prinzi on November 21, 2006

The teaser trailer.

Even better, a 4 minute video from HBO, including everything from the trailer, plus more footage and interviews with the cast.

Oh, that was awesome! I’m so excited that I’m even willing to give Gambon another shot and overlook Daniel Radcliffe’s short hair!
Thanks, Travis, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Agreed! I had thoughts on those same two issues. I said to my wife, “You know, that was actually a well-delivered line by Gambon.” And then, “Harry’s hair is too short and neat.” I liked it in Goblet better.

Ok…I am LOVING Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange!!! She looks fantastic! And Imelda Staunton as Umbridge is a PERFECT match. I really have to hand it to the casting department, they have done a great job! OoTP has probably been my least favorite of the books, but it looks like it is going to be an incredible movie! I think my favorite part will be the DA sessions!! I CAN’T WAIT! July 7th will be my Christmas next year!!

Just saw the trailer. Radcliffe looks older (they better hurry up with the next two movies), Bonham Carter looks hot, Gambon has as little gravitas as he ever did, and Rickman makes Snape sound both angry and pleading at the same time as he tries to teach Harry occulomency.

If you’re talking about Gambon’s delivery of the line “the evidence of the Dark Lord’s return is incontrovertible”, then I’m sorry to say that I thought it dreadful and a good illustration of everything that is wrong with his portrayal of Dumbledore.

Rather than being deilvered with quiet and commanding authority, he blurts out the line like an irascible old malefactor. Talk about loser’s lurgy.

If that was really how Dumbledore deported himself in front of the Wizengamot, then frankly it is small wonder they didn’t listen to his advice. Perfect manner in which to alienate a room full of people with nine words or less. :o

There is nothing in Gambon’s reading of his lines to suggest Rowling’s Dumbledore.

I believe he is misinterpreting Dumbledore. I read that he is a big fan of DeNiro’s. Perhaps he’s trying to channel DeNiro. Or perhaps he’s doing a late-career Olivier: he’s taken the role for the monetary pay-off and has no respect for the material.

He is a stage actor, and supposedly an accomplished one (although I note that his major award was for a comedy role, despite having been nominated for many dramatic performances). Assuming the ability is there, what he needs to do is read the books and re-think his approach.

Reyhan, Gambon has said in interviews that he doesn’t need to read the books. The script is enough. Furthermore, he says that every character he plays, he just plays an aspect of himself. So he says about playing Dumbledore, “I just put on a beard and play myself.”

Big. BIG. Problem. It’s almost like he’s not misinterpreting Dumbledore – he’s just making no attempt to understand him whatsoever.

Travis, what you’re saying doesn’t surprise me at all, having seen a couple of his woeful performances. Complete rubbish.

What extraordinary arrogance and disregard for Rowling’s work.

Bad thought, which I need to share.

I watched the end of PS with my 6 year old. Loved the scene where Dumbledore visits Harry in sick bay. Richard Harris plays him with warmth, gentleness, reassurance, and the slightest touch of whimsy. For a bed-time story, I read out loud the confrontation at the fountain from OotP because he wanted to hear about Voldemort. After he went to sleep, I read the ensuing scene in Dumbledore’s study.

In that scene, Harry rants and raves and throws things around, while Dumbledore waits out his fury patiently. If Gambon starts yelling at Harry during that scene, I will be very not happy. If he grabs him, I don’t know what I’ll do.

Any ideas on how to survive that would be welcome.

I’ve been fearing that scene, and I’ve also been fearing the battle between Dumbledore and Voldemort in the Ministry. I guarantee that both the director Gambon will turn that into some crazy power struggle with lots of insane special effects, when in reality, it was Dumbledore’s calm and unshaken response to Voldemort that so unnerved him.

I just checked the credits: both the director and the writer (of the screenplay) are new: David Yates and Michael Goldenberg. Perhaps one or the other realized how the scenes with Dumbledore need to be played and put the brakes on Gambon.

Anyways, it’s too late now for OotP. It’s in the can (except of course if the test audiences boo the initial screenings and they have to go back for a re-shoot).
