NarniaWeb, a news website devoted to the Narnia films, has posted the first trailer for the next Narnia movie, Prince Caspian, today. This is certainly newsworthy for Harry Potter considering that J.K. Rowling has said in past interviews that C.S. Lewis is a “genius” and that “[h]e was a very learned man and created a very rich mythology of his own” (Blakeney, Sally. “The Golden Fairytale,” The Australian, 7 November 1998). Rowling, in an earlier interview, said “Even now, if I was in a room with one of the Narnia books I would pick it up like a shot and re-read it” (de Bertodano, Helena. “Harry Potter Charms a Nation.” Eletronic Telegraph, 25 July 1998). Tying Prince Caspian to Harry Potter, it would be interesting to compare the rocky relationship between Prince Caspian and his uncle King Miraz with that of Harry Potter and Uncle Vernon. Well, there are the obvious comparisons. Neither one cares for their nephew. But Uncle Vernon is not a murderer like Miraz is. Miraz killed his brother & then all of his brother’s supporters or exiled them. Vernon lets Harry live with them by virtue of Petunia’s insistence that this be the case. Miraz doesn’t murder Caspian as a baby because he has no heir of his own & would rather see a blood relation on the throne than some stranger. To that end, he educates Caspian in the ways of kingship. But as soon as Miraz gets an heir of his own, he plots Caspian’s murder.
There’s a big difference between Miraz & Vernon. Neither one likes their nephew. But Vernon’s dislike is more benign than Miraz’s. Miraz may hate his nephew but he educates him & cares for him as long as it fits his purposes. When it doesn’t, he plans to kill Caspian. The farthest Vernon goes is trying to kick Harry out of the house in OOTP.
