The news is available at jkrowling.com. Apparently it “will be very different from the Harry Potter series”–which could mean just about anything.
Curious readers can sign up for further announcements at Rowling’s site.
It’s been a long time since we had any good prognostications to make over future HP material. Anyone want to take guesses on what Rowling will write?
UPDATE: According to the Publishers Lunch announcement, the book will be published through Little, Brown, which put out Twilight. Also–this ought to make a lot of Pub members happy–the book will be available in ebook as well as print.

Wow, how exciting! Where on the website does it say – I don’t see it in the news feed.
Not to be bitter or cranky or anything, but I’d like it if we could just finally get the Potter eBooks we’ve been promised through Pottermore. Which almost four months after it’s promised opening still isn’t opened & has given no news on when it plans to open. This article makes note that Rowling’s new book will be released in electronic format but reiterates that the Potter books will only be available “sometime” this year. Aaaaargh!!
Okay, now that’s out of the way…
We probably need a poll put up on who will buy Rowling’s new novel or what the interest level is.
As to what she might write, I’m really not sure. Something in the mystery genre perhaps. Whether or not I would read it greatly depends on the genre & how much the story appeals to me.
Kat, just click on jkrowling.com. I’m not sure why it wouldn’t show up in a news feed, but it’s the whole front of the site showing the news.
revgeorge, I think I updated the post just as you were posting your comment and therefore said almost exactly what you did.
But yeah, they need to get those Potter books out NOW. They’ve been promised for much too long.
I bet it’s a mystery, too. Maybe with a little bit of a Fabian theme to it?
Ah, there it is! When I went there before it showed only the old site for some reason. Interesting that they’re redesigning that, too.
I thought her other seven novels were for adults
Well, seeing as one of Rowling’s favorite authors is Jane Austen, maybe we’ll get a Regency Romance.
Or maybe a mystery/romance. Just so long as her book’s not too “adult,” if you know what I mean.
I’d give a crack at reading whatever she chooses to write. It will be high quality, but Harry’s was the story she had to tell.
She’s on a hiding to nothing; comparisons to HP will be inevitably made, and I’m sure the new work will be found wanting in some way.
Millions of small adults grew up with Rowling’s writing now we’re bigger (or Larger) adults…
I wonder what the book will be
That’s a major coup for Little, Brown. Working in publishing, I have to wonder what was going on behind the scenes at Bloomsbury. Of course it’s only charitable to assume that the arrangement was amicable on all sides. But they’d be crazy to turn down a surefire bestseller like that– I’ve heard it said that Rowling almost singlehandedly kept the book retail industry afloat during the recession– and most author contracts have at least some form of “first refusal” rights for a given number of future projects. (Though naturally JKR has enough clout to be published, like the gorilla in the joke, by whoever the heck she wants to be published by.)
So it could be that it’s simply a type of book Bloomsbury doesn’t handle at all, though it’s hard to think what that could be. Hmmm….
I will definitely read whatever she writes! I can’t wait for it to come out!
I saw her once say in an interview that she feared writing a book after the Potter series and having it not be good, knowing that so many people will buy it.
I’m glad for her that she’s trying another genre or style of writing, and I’ll be amazed if she doesn’t have some ups and downs. But she has me as a fan for life, even if writes some that aren’t fantastic. She has such an incredible imagination that I’m happy to go on the journey with her.
I see Yahoo is running a poll today on the New Rowling book with the choices “Will you check it out” or “Will you stick with Harry Potter.”
Right now, it’s running 58% “yes, check it out” to 42% “no, stick with Harry Potter.”
Ah, but how long will it take to translat it into my native American so I can read it? <ducks and runs>
I will also read whatever she writes and most probably buy the book the day it comes out. While I have a preference for science fiction and fantasy, I tend to read all over the place. A mystery would be great. Something like Jane Austen not so, though. Her books put me to sleep.
