Setups and Payoffs: Unforgivable Curses

by Travis Prinzi on March 15, 2006

Janet Batchler is continuing her excellent setups/payoffs series, adding one on the Unforgivable Curses. Here are some interesting implications for the Imperius Curse:

First, we learn later that Madam Rosmerta was the one who cast the curse on Katie — but Rosmerta was herself under the Imperius Curse at the time! This tells us that someone under the Imperius Curse can actually cast the Curse, which would seem to allow the original spell-caster enormous amounts of power.

We also know that, in GOF, Victor Krum was Imperiused into performing the Cruciatus Curse on Fleur during the Third Task [GF-31]. Can we therefore assume that someone can be Imperiused into casting the final Unforgivable Curse — Avada Kedevra? If so, the caster of the Imperius Curse is in a position to go around killing people without ever being linked to the crimes (go solve that one, CSI!).

I wouldn’t be surprised, given these two set-ups, if we see exactly that in Book 7: Someone Imperiused into performing Avada Kedevra. Should we see an unexpected murder, from an unexpected source (say, Percy, leaps to mind), let’s keep that in mind.
