Sorcerer’s Stone Shipping?

by Travis Prinzi on September 11, 2008

Leaky is reporting that the 10th anniversary edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone has (accidentally?) been shipped to some who have pre-ordered it.

Any Hog’s Head patrons have their copy yet?

Kind of frustrating that some will be able to examine the new material before others.  Either way, we’ll still be having Sorcerer’s Stone Week, starting on the day the book is “officially” released.

Pre-order your copy today.  Hey, you might get it before the rest of us.

I reserved mine at my local Barnes and Noble (where I spend a lot of time) several weeks ago. When I heard that some people were getting their copies in the mail and that some had seen them at Borders and B&N, I decided to check today. The clerk looked it up, and they should be getting copies soon and since there is no restriction on when they sell them, even though it says Sept 23, they will call me when it comes in–which I guess should be soon.

Cool.

According to UPS, mine is out for delivery and will arrive today.

Travis PrinziNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 8:06 am

How odd. I guess we’ll have already worked through all the new material before Sorcerer’s Stone Week even starts.

Travis PrinziNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 8:26 am

I’m actually mildly frustrated that the book has shipped early, because I can’t afford a copy till my paycheck next Friday. I had planned to go straight to the bookstore the day it released, so I wouldn’t have to count on the shipping being delayed. Guess I should have pre-ordered!

I’ll need reports from everyone about the new material.

Is that new avatar G.K. Chesterton?

Travis PrinziNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 12:41 pm

yup!

revgeorgeNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 2:36 pm

I ordered my copy from Amazon last night. It said the book was in stock. But then when I got the order confirmation it said the book wouldn’t ship until Sept 17th! So, I don’t know what’s going on with this book.

revgeorgeNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 2:37 pm

I didn’t realize GK Chesterson looked so much like Bob Dylan. :)

Travis PrinziNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 2:38 pm

revgeorge, click “refresh” (or clear your cache if that doesn’t do it).

The 17th is still a lot earlier than the 23rd.

Amy H. SturgisNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 3:05 pm

It’s here! And on the inside page is a terrific sketch of Snape (complete with manly stubble) by Rowling circa 1992-1993. She writes: “Although I have spent years denying that Snape is a vampire (one of the more outlandish and persistent fan theories), I must say he does look a little Count Dracula-ish in that cloak.”

And indeed he does.

revgeorgeNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Clearing my cache worked, Travis. There is a little bit of difference between Dylan & Chesterson.

Since I have two day shipping through Amazon Prime, I should get my book on Sept 19th. Which will give me just enough time to read through it before I leave on Sunday for a conference.

Still, I’m extremely jealous that Amy has her book already. :)

Travis PrinziNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 3:14 pm

I’m jealous, too. I’d be writing up posts about the new material tonight!

Amy H. SturgisNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 3:18 pm

Sorry, revgeorge – I’ll try not to be too annoying by dancing or blowing raspberries or singing “Nyah, nyah, nyah nyah nyah.” :)

By the way, there’s a gorgeous full-page color frontispiece by Mary GrandPre depicting Hagrid and some of the children crossing the water and approaching Hogwarts. It’s stunning.

JohnnyNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 3:40 pm

I’m also jealous, although I’ll get mine hopefully by Sept. 17.

Travis PrinziNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Johnny, BN doesn’t actually have copies for sale in the stores yet, do they?

revgeorgeNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 6:04 pm

Now Amazon’s saying my copy has shipped today & will be here on Sept 17th, although technically with two day shipping it should be here on Tuesday.

Travis PrinziNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 6:38 pm

Alright, I’m just going to have to order tonight and not eat this week.

korg20000bcNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 6:59 pm

I hope the wife and kid have good singing voices.

Travis PrinziNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 7:00 pm

Ha!

Oh, I’ll let them eat. My food will be new Potter material. If only BN had a copy tonight.

Amy H. SturgisNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 7:35 pm

On a totally random note – apologies for the tangent! – I’ve been reading the 1894 novel Trilby by George du Maurier (aka Daphne’s dad), and it’s crazy how similar the descriptions of Svengali (some lamentable and unappetizing 19th-century anti-Semitism aside) sound like Rowling’s description of Snape. And now that I look at Rowling’s early illustration of Snape, the parallels are even clearer!

Now back to your regularly scheduled discussion thread…

korg20000bcNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 7:58 pm

I remember seeing some parts of the 1931 Svengali movie on the film clip of Steve Taylor’s song of the same name. It looked very atmospheric.

Found it. http://hk.youtube.com/watch?v=lznweUBzWTI

Amy H. SturgisNo Gravatar September 12, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Oooh, thanks, korg20000bc!

korg20000bcNo Gravatar September 13, 2008 at 2:27 am

What’s so special about this Philosopher’s Stone edition?

Travis PrinziNo Gravatar September 13, 2008 at 7:56 am

Come on, Matthew, you of all people should know: New Mary Grand Pre art!

For me, the promised “new material” is the draw.

Travis PrinziNo Gravatar September 13, 2008 at 8:02 am

So far, there’s been no sudden influx of posts at the major Potter pages explaining the new material. Comments at Leaky have noted two things: the drawing of Snape that our own Dr. Sturgis mentioned, and that the book is 11 pages longer than the original publication. Different typeset? Or is there new material embedded?

Borders has the books on shelves, I’m told. I’m going to stop by Borders today.
