Before we dive too deeply into the Potter, fantasy, sci-fi, and other geek links of the week, don’t forget to watch for Doctor Who posts from Travis, or to comment on Kris’ series on numerology! I’m headed for Three myself after I get this post up.
“In the world of “Twilight” and “True Blood” and all the contemporized stories, we thought we’d go back to the original”
…but then, the plot summary reads like this:
The series, which bypassed the traditional pilot stage, takes place in the 1890s and finds Dracula living a double life in London as an American businessman interested in bringing modern science to Victorian society. His true plan to exact revenge on those who burdened him centuries ago, however, is derailed when he falls in love with a woman who seems to be his reincarnated wife.
I’ve read Dracula, and I don’t remember any of that.
Happy Friday the 13th!! Hope you’re not superstitious. I know I plan to have black cats crossing my path all day long as I have 5 of them. 🙂
Here’s a blast of various stories and links with a few probably not so pithy comments by me. Enjoy!
First up, Daniel Radcliffe will be hostingSaturday Night Live for the first time this weekend. From the story I read apparently he can be funny. So, if you like that sort of thing, be sure to check him out.
In other Potter news, the President of China has declared a culture war against Harry Potter, along with people and things like Lady Gaga and The Transformers films, as being destructive to Chinese culture and unity. Now, while I agree that Lady Gaga and The Transformers would eat away at the cultural foundations of any nation, I wouldn’t say the same for Harry Potter. Hu Jintao, the President, has called for the Communist Party to respond with some culture of its own, forgetting, as the article aptly points out, that government cannot really produce “culture” on demand. Check out the full article for all the details. (H/T to Carrie-Ann Biondi for the previous two links.)
Time for some around the common room with a variety of linked stories. First up, do you like Star Wars? Do you like cooking? How would you feel about cooking with Star Wars? Now thanks to one company you can find out. They have a selection of Star Wars cooking utensils. I personally cook very little but a Stormtrooper or Darth Vader spatula does look quite appealing. 🙂 (H/T to Arabella for the link.)
From cooking to cleaning. Dan Radcliffe is apparently a bit of a slob, so his girlfriend of two years has given him two years to learn how to clean up after himself. I thought that’s a pretty generous amount of time. Although as busy as Radcliffe is with various projects maybe that’s not so long a time for him personally. As a follow up to that story, Radcliffe also did an interview where he ended up cleaning up around the interviewer’s home. (Note: Apparently some naughty language in this interview.) The article concludes with a question we’ve discussed before but which is still relevant: Can Radcliffe move on from his Harry Potter role and develop a further acting career? (Actually the article asked if he could move on to a real acting career, which I thought rather demeaning as if acting in Harry Potter wasn’t really acting.)
This was taken a few weeks ago during the London Premiere of the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. Daniel Radcliffe rushed over to the studio from the premiere to appear on BBC’s Graham Norton Show where among other things, he does a rendition of Tom Lehrer’s “The Elements”, a song of the Periodic Table.
Yes, you heard that right. Apparently Warner Brothers, amongst the plethora of other things they’ve trademarked, have also got Quidditch lingerie copyrighted. So, if you’re looking for a special gift for that certain someone, make sure it’s got a Warner Brothers trademark on it. 🙂
Here are a few other stories relating to Harry Potter that caught my eye:
Saw this story over at The Leaky Cauldron today. Eight years ago this month the first Potter movie came out. In the story Chris Columbus, the director of the first two movies, looks back at the casting of the Trio and also how far they’ve come both as actors and as young adults. Two other items of note: One, Columbus is directing the new movie based off of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series; two, in December ultimate DVD editions of the first two Potter movies will be released.
Correction. Tom Felton and Daniel Radcliffe talk Cricket. I found this photo today and thought it so brilliant that I, with some nudging by Travis, decided to post it here. The photo was taken back in August when the two Potter stars attended a Cricket game. And yes, while they play characters that are often at odds with one another (that’s an understatement), Radcliffe and Felton are friends in real life.
