C.S. Lewis and The Doctor

by revgeorge on November 23, 2009

For me, two very important events happened yesterday and today.  Yesterday, November 22, 1963, C.S. Lewis died, his death being overshadowed by the assasination of John F. Kennedy.  Aldous Huxley also died that day too.  Lewis is well known for his Chronicles of Narnia books and also for his Christian apologetical works, even giving a series of radio lectures during World War II which would later form the book Mere Christianity.  Among many works, Lewis also wrote science fiction, The Space Trilogy, and also, what I consider to be his best work, Till We Have Faces, a retelling of the myth of Cupid and Psyche. That’s the question being asked by Philadelphia Literature Examiner’s Peter McEllhenney. He answers, “no,” not great; but they are literature. I’m not really sure what that means. The question caught my attention immediately, because the first 60% of Hog’s Head Conversations contain essays which, in one way or another, answer this question, “yes” – primarily the two essays that start the volume: “The Literary Value of the Harry Potter Books,” by Colin Manlove, and “Repotting Harry Potter: Popular Lit Made Legit,” by James W. Rowling’s strengths, according to McEllhenney, are her storytelling (his assessment of this is spot on) and her characters (who, if not very complex, he says, at least “engage our sympathy” and “are vividly drawn.”) [click to continue…]

My favorite podcast is The Classic Tales, with B.J. Harrison.  For those of you who love audiobooks, great news: B.J. has started The Classic Novels podcast!  This is not a free one, like The Classic Tales, but it does mean you’ll get professional audiobooks for a great price.

The books will be released episodically, and the first episode of Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, is available!

Perfect timing for me, since I’ve just finished up an audiobook production of Dracula. Harrison’s great novels podcast is next on my list!
