Monday Reminders

by revgeorge on January 25, 2010

Just some reminders for this Monday afternoon.  First, remember The Hogshead now has a forum available for even more discussion on things Potter and whatever else you want to talk about.  We just reached 50 members.  Congrats to mrmathman for being the 50th member!!  If you haven’t joined yet, feel free to check out the forum and join in the conversations.

Relief efforts for Haiti are continuing.  Just a reminder that The Harry Potter Alliance, in conjunction with many other HP fandom sites, is continuing its Helping Haiti Heal campaign.  By donating to their campaign you earn various entries for drawings of items that have been donated by various people and organizations.  JK Rowling has donated a full British edition set of the HP books plus a handwritten note of thanks.  To earn a chance for that gift, a donation of $100 is asked.  Lots of other items at various levels of giving are available, including several books donated by our own Travis Prinzi.  The proceeds go to support the organization Partners in Health.  Donations are open until January 30th at 11:59PM.  If you’re so inclined check out this opportunity to help out the people of Haiti.  This drive raised over $33,000 in under six hours on Saturday, but I’m sure they could use more.

In other efforts for Haiti, DriveThruRPG is offering a fantastic deal for people who enjoy role-playing games.  Through January 31st, if you donate $20, which will go to Doctors Without Borders, you will get over a $1000 in role-playing games and supplements in pdf format.  You can also donate $5 or $10 amounts which will be matched.  So far, they’ve raised over $130,000.  I’m downloading all my pdf’s even as I write.

So, that’s the reminders for Monday.  Thanks!

Check back often today; it’s going to be really busy here at The Hog’s Head! Frequent posts for this day-before-the-movie, including interesting news and the stunning conclusion to our Half-Blood Prince Read-Through!

  • Are you on Twitter? Participate today and tomorrow in the Dumbledore Twitter Challenge, by The Harry Potter Alliance (and don’t forget to follow @thehogshead!); More thoughts on this later in the day if I have time.
  • Lev Grossman writes about Wizard Rock for TIME. A very good article.
  • A new article on Gambon’s Dumbledore, with interview quotes. Fair warning: there’s lots in here for us anti-Gambon folks to get good and worked up about. If he says, “I play myself” one more time, I’m going to call him up and ask him why he chose acting as a career.
  • Spoiler Warning if you click this link: Janet Batchler got to an early screening of Half-Blood Prince and has written her review.
  • Reminder to Rochesterians that I’m at the Brighton Library tonight at 7pm, and I hope to see you at Tinseltown for the midnight showing of Half-Blood Prince!
  • And yes, I’ll be writing my review at 3am when I get back from the film.

OlympicsI’m going to begin a new Hog’s Head practice of starting each week off with a subject for discussion.  This week – the Olympics and the TriWizard Tournament.  With the Beijing Olympics underway, Potter fans are reminded of the “Olympic” event that is the TriWizard Tournament in Goblet of Fire.  The HP Alliance is noting the parallels along the lines of international cooperation and the Olympics’ theme, “One World, One Dream,” particularly in their call to use this time to raise awareness about Darfur

Goblet of FireMost definitely, Goblet of Fire, particularly in the character of Dumbledore, emphasizes the need for international cooperation in the fight against evil.  But beyond Book 4, this theme gets little to no attention.  In Deathly Hallows, Voldemort is brought down quite apart from widespread international cooperation.  In reality, he’s brought down by the courageous actions of a few (non-government) individuals.

In light of this, some questions for discussion:

  • What happened to the theme of international cooperation in Harry Potter?
  • Does the lack of emphasis on the theme after Book 4 reflect the improbability of international cooperation (“it just ain’t gonna happen”), or does it reflect the Fabian element (“it’s gonna take a long time and a lot of work before that happens”)?
  • Is there something discordant about the emphasis on globalization in Book 4 and the clearly localized solution to the Voldemort problem in Book 7?
  • Is it simply a plot issue – Voldemort didn’t have time to become an international threat before Harry brought him down?
  • Overall – what is message of the Potter books about international cooperation?

Harry Potter This Week: Half Blood Prince Trailer, Harry’s Birthday

by Travis Prinzi 07.27.2008

It should be a fun forthcoming week in Harry Potter’s world.
Tuesday, the 29th, the Half-Blood Prince Trailer will be appearing exclusively on AOL.  It will be our first live-action look at the new film.  I really enjoyed what Yates did with Order of the Phoenix, but I have to admit I’m a bit nervous about this [...]

Happy Birthday, Deathly Hallows

by Travis Prinzi 07.21.2008

What were you doing at this time last year?  You were reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  I remember dropping Sophia off with Tricia’s mom and heading to the park on two hours’ sleep (I had read until 5am), and then reading all day long.
Today marks the anniversary of the release of Deathly [...]
