Monday Reminders

by revgeorge on January 25, 2010

Just some reminders for this Monday afternoon.  First, remember The Hogshead now has a forum available for even more discussion on things Potter and whatever else you want to talk about.  We just reached 50 members.  Congrats to mrmathman for being the 50th member!!  If you haven’t joined yet, feel free to check out the forum and join in the conversations.

Relief efforts for Haiti are continuing.  Just a reminder that The Harry Potter Alliance, in conjunction with many other HP fandom sites, is continuing its Helping Haiti Heal campaign.  By donating to their campaign you earn various entries for drawings of items that have been donated by various people and organizations.  JK Rowling has donated a full British edition set of the HP books plus a handwritten note of thanks.  To earn a chance for that gift, a donation of $100 is asked.  Lots of other items at various levels of giving are available, including several books donated by our own Travis Prinzi.  The proceeds go to support the organization Partners in Health.  Donations are open until January 30th at 11:59PM.  If you’re so inclined check out this opportunity to help out the people of Haiti.  This drive raised over $33,000 in under six hours on Saturday, but I’m sure they could use more.

In other efforts for Haiti, DriveThruRPG is offering a fantastic deal for people who enjoy role-playing games.  Through January 31st, if you donate $20, which will go to Doctors Without Borders, you will get over a $1000 in role-playing games and supplements in pdf format.  You can also donate $5 or $10 amounts which will be matched.  So far, they’ve raised over $130,000.  I’m downloading all my pdf’s even as I write.

So, that’s the reminders for Monday.  Thanks!

oldtoadFor those in the Rochester, NY and surrounding areas, I will be speaking on Harry Potter & Imagination at The Old Toad on Alexander St. in Rochester at 6pm on February 19.

This month, as something of set-up for my talk, William H. Chellis will be speaking on “The Essential Conservative: Edmund Burke,” with emphasis Burke’s concept of “moral imagination.” That meeting will be at The Old Toad, 6pm on January 27.

edmund-burkeWith that as a set-up, I’ll be focusing on how imaginative fiction reflects and critiques existing sociopolitical realities and teaches us to “imagine better,” both for inward change in ourselves and outward change in the world.  There will, of course, be places of similarity and discord with Burke, which I will do my best to expound.

So, it’s Potter’s Politics at The Old Toad on February 19. Put it on your calendars now!

Also, note that I’ve updated the Schedule page with this event and with a new promo flyer, and I’ve also included links to the audio for previous talks when available.

Around the Common Room

by Travis Prinzi on January 6, 2009

  • Dynamic Duo Deal? I’m not sure how long Amazon.com keeps its “buy these two book” pairings together, but presently, at the Amazon.com page for Harry Potter & Imagination, it’s my book and John Granger’s book, How Harry Cast His Spell for $26.38. [Note: Please observe that you're not actually getting a "deal," as in, a discount; it's the two books' prices added together. I just used "deal" for the alliteration. Sorry if anyone was misled!]
  • Speaking of Mr. Granger, his review of Twilight is up.
  • Just a reminder that if you’re a Twitter or a Plurk user, I’m on both – username, “thehogshead,” or just follow the links in the sidebar.
  • I’m also experimenting with LinkedIn now, so feel free to find me there (under my actual name, “Travis Prinzi.”)
  • I chose some extended quotes from Tolkien for his birthday post at The Rabbit Room.
  • For those in the Rochester, NY area, I will be speaking on my book, Harry Potter & Imagination, at the February meeting of The Club – Thurs, Feb 19 at 6pm @ The Old Toad.  More information to come.

Imagination as “Third Characteristic” of Humanity

by Travis Prinzi 12.26.2008

In between the strict rationalism of the scientific fatalist and the elusive, esoteric musings of gnostic spiritualism, and as a necessary alternative to both, is “Myth.” Clyde S. Kilby writes,
We intellectualize in order to know, but paradoxically, intellectualization tends to destroy its object. The harder we grasp at the thing, the more its reality moves [...]

Harry Potter & Imagination Chapter Titles!

by Travis Prinzi 10.31.2008

“What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality.”  Those words, written by Plutarch and quoted by J.K. Rowling in her 2008 Harvard commencement speech, sum up both the Harry Potter series and Travis Prinzi’s analysis of the best-selling books in Harry Potter & Imagination: The Way Between Two Worlds.   Great imaginative literature places readers between two worlds – the [...]
