Harry Potter & Imagination

Time for another opportunity to win my book, Harry Potter & Imagination: The Way Between Two Worlds. This is the same contest as last time, with slightly different rules, and you’re promoting a different link this time.  Today, the book went up at Amazon.com with book cover image and all.  This is the link you’ll be promoting.  (If you have your own Amazon Affiliates account, feel free to use your own code. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just use the link as I’ve given it.)

Here are the rules:

Promote the Amazon.com page for Harry Potter & Imagination: The Way Between Two Worlds. Here are several ways to do that:

  • Publish the link on your blog.
  • Share the post on Twitter, Plurk, Facebook, MySpace, or anywhere else you can think of.
  • Email your friends.
  • Get a megaphone and shout the URL around your neighborhood.
  • Get primo tickets for a football game this weekend, and bring a big sign that will end up on TV.
  • Harry Potter fansite forums and blog comments sections.
  • Any other creative way you can think of.
  • For more examples, see the comments from the last contest.

Once you’ve shared the Amazon.com page, come back here and tell us you did so, and which method you chose, in the comments.  Here’s the fun part: Your name gets entered each time you share the post in one way or another. To add even more incentive Facebook counts for 2 shares (your name gets put in twice).

Feel free to ask questions in the comments or by E-owl.

Deadline for entry is midnight EST on Friday, December 19. Winner will be announced Saturday.

Note: Please be sure you’re sharing the right page.  It’s the one linked here, not the present post that you are reading.  But tell us you shared it in the comments for this post.

Well, you had to know it was coming.  This one’s going to be more involved than the first three, and it’s going to stay open for a couple of days.  The winner of this contest will receive a free, autographed copy of my book, Harry Potter & Imagination: The Way Between Two Worlds.

Here’s how you enter.  Publicize the post, “Pre-order Harry Potter & Imagination.”  Any mode of publicity will do, but here are some suggestions:

  • At the bottom of the post, there is a “Share/Save” button. Several of these links are ways to share content: Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, etc.  Any of these will do.  Most require you to have an account with them, but setting one up is usually really easy.
  • Email your friends.
  • Share the post on Twitter, Plurk, Facebook, MySpace, or anywhere else you can think of.
  • Get a megaphone and shout the URL around your neighborhood.
  • Get primo tickets for a football game this weekend, and bring a big sign that will end up on TV.
  • Harry Potter fansite forums and blog comments sections.
  • Any other creative way you can think of.

Around the Common Room

by Travis Prinzi on November 16, 2008

Several items of interest:

  • Autographed Copies of Harry Potter & Imagination: I’ve been getting this question a lot: “How do I get a signed copy?”  It’s easy!  Pre-order the book from Zossima.com.  Zossima and I have worked out a way to get my signature on copies of books ordered from Zossima’s website.  So go ahead and get your copy!  We’re hoping for sometime in the first two weeks of December for a release date, as long as we don’t hit anymore snags along the way.
  • Speaking of pre-orders, there are currently 4 books available for pre-order at Zossima.com.  I recommend them all, but I want to draw special attention to James Thomas’s Repotting Harry Potter, which I’ve mentioned several times here.  You’re going to love it.
  • The new Hogwarts Radio podcast asked me to join their discussion on the new Half-Blood Prince trailer.  It’ll be available later today, and I’ll update then with a link.
  • Special thanks to Greg and Penny for their very kind words and plug for my book in Episode #93.  Episode #93 is well worth your time, and I wrote an entire chapter on this issue – feminist readings of Harry Potter - in my book.
  • Speaking of trailer reactions and HP Progs, Penny joined Mugglecast for their reaction to the new trailer – listen to Mugglecast episode #163 here!

A great C.S. Lewis quote courtesy of The Kibitzer:*

In reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself. Like the night sky in the Greek poem, I see with a myriad eyes, but it is still I who see. Here, as in worship, in love, in moral action, and in knowing, I transcend myself; and am never more myself than when I do.

~ C.S. Lewis, An Experiment in Criticism, p. 141.

That is the imaginative power of literature and what I’m arguing for in Harry Potter & Imagination.  Like when the protagonist in MacDonald’s Phantastes enters stories that he reads in Fairyland so profoundly that he becomes the character, we learn to see differently, to see through different eyes, yet still our own, with the Coleridgean “transformed vision” (for more on that, listen to Hog’s Head PubCast #60, and read John Granger’s The Deathly Hallows Lectures).  We are Harry at King’s Cross, who no longer needs glasses.

Tolerance is the new fundamentalism.  [click to continue…]
