Just a reminder that the Potter Pundits will be appearing live tonight, March 6, 2010, at Pace University in the NYC area. For those who can’t make it in person (and I suspect that’s many of us), the good news is that Pottercast will be offering a livestream of the event. You can find the livestream here. The event starts at 7PM Eastern Standard Time. Tune in to hear the Potter Pundits–Travis Prinzi, John Granger, and James Thomas–discuss Harry Potter as great literature!
Great news! The Hog’s Head PubCast will be included in the Azkatraz Podcast Palooza on Monday, July 20th! This is going to be a fantastic session of the PubCast, as I will be joined by John Granger and James Thomas for a panel discussion. This was our proposal:
The topic will be a discussion of the postmodern social-justice elements of the series: how Rowling advocates character transformation leading to outward social change as her method and prescription for creating a just society. We’ll discuss how literature works within a culture to reflect it and critique it, and how, in particular, the symbols and themes of the Potter series accomplish this.
And we’ll even have a lot of fun doing it.
Since I don’t want to both moderate and be a panel member, I have another exciting announcement about this podcast: It will be moderated by our favorite Potter Podcasters: Greg and Penny of HP Progs!
We’ll be preceded by SpellCast, and followed by Hogwarts Radio (whom I’ve joined before and will again) and an reality-TV type event that will select the next great Potter podcast.
This event just keeps getting better and better. If you haven’t registered yet, do so! I have great news about my Azkatraz proposals, which I’ll share soon, and a couple podcasts coming soon, one of which is recorded and just needs some editing. Stay tuned!
By the way, for HogPro fans who also visit here: John Granger’s website is working on recovering itself. Should be back to normal soon.
Alright, you’ve read Harry Potter and Imagination (what’s that? you haven’t? Order it here!), and you’re wondering what’s next. I have the answer for you:
James W. Thomas’s book, Repotting Harry Potter, is now available at Amazon.com! Dr. Thomas writes as a 30+ year scholar with a keen literary eye and a brilliant wit that will have you alternating between “Aha!” moments and all-out laughter as you journey with him through a re-read of the seven Harry Potter novels.
The book’s description:
A professor of literature for over thirty years, Dr. James W. Thomas takes us on a tour through the Potter books in order to enjoy them in different ways upon subsequent readings. Re-readers will be pleasantly surprised at what they may have missed in the books and at what secrets Rowling has hidden for us to uncover as we revisit these stories. The professor’s informal and often lighthearted discussions focus on puns, humor, foreshadowing, literary allusions, narrative techniques, and other aspects of the Potter books that are hard-to-see on the hurried first or fifth reading. Dr. Thomas’s brilliant but light touch proves that a “serious” reading of literature can be fun.

Several items of interest:
- Autographed Copies of Harry Potter & Imagination: I’ve been getting this question a lot: “How do I get a signed copy?” It’s easy! Pre-order the book from Zossima.com. Zossima and I have worked out a way to get my signature on copies of books ordered from Zossima’s website. So go ahead and get your copy! We’re hoping for sometime in the first two weeks of December for a release date, as long as we don’t hit anymore snags along the way.
- Speaking of pre-orders, there are currently 4 books available for pre-order at Zossima.com. I recommend them all, but I want to draw special attention to James Thomas’s Repotting Harry Potter, which I’ve mentioned several times here. You’re going to love it.
- The new Hogwarts Radio podcast asked me to join their discussion on the new Half-Blood Prince trailer. It’ll be available later today, and I’ll update then with a link.
- Special thanks to Greg and Penny for their very kind words and plug for my book in Episode #93. Episode #93 is well worth your time, and I wrote an entire chapter on this issue – feminist readings of Harry Potter - in my book.
- Speaking of trailer reactions and HP Progs, Penny joined Mugglecast for their reaction to the new trailer – listen to Mugglecast episode #163 here!
