Where does the Hogwarts Professor teach when the school of Witchcraft and Wizardry is not in session?

Forks High School, with a creepy class of vampires, werewolves, and academics.

Great news!  The Hog’s Head PubCast will be included in the Azkatraz Podcast Palooza on Monday, July 20th!  This is going to be a fantastic session of the PubCast, as I will be joined by John Granger and James Thomas for a panel discussion.  This was our proposal:

The topic will be a discussion of the postmodern social-justice elements of the series: how Rowling advocates character transformation leading to outward social change as her method and prescription for creating a just society.  We’ll discuss how literature works within a culture to reflect it and critique it, and how, in particular, the symbols and themes of the Potter series accomplish this.

And we’ll even have a lot of fun doing it.

Since I don’t want to both moderate and be a panel member, I have another exciting announcement about this podcast: It will be moderated by our favorite Potter Podcasters: Greg and Penny of HP Progs!

We’ll be preceded by SpellCast, and followed by Hogwarts Radio (whom I’ve joined before and will again) and an reality-TV type event that will select the next great Potter podcast.

This event just keeps getting better and better.  If you haven’t registered yet, do so!  I have great news about my Azkatraz proposals, which I’ll share soon, and a couple podcasts coming soon, one of which is recorded and just needs some editing.  Stay tuned!

By the way, for HogPro fans who also visit here: John Granger’s website is working on recovering itself.  Should be back to normal soon.

Since we’ve had some interesting Twilight discussion here, I figured some of our readers would be interested to know that John Granger is blogging away on the series, drawing specific parallels between the initial critical response to Harry Potter and the current critical response to Twilight.

Your ‘09 Reading Plans?

January 10, 2009

What’s the first book you’ve finished or will finish in 2009?
I just finished Paradise Lost, by John Milton, as read by Nadia May.
As far as actual eyes-on-print goes, I’ll probably finished The Enchanted Castle by Edith Nesbit before anything else.
I usually don’t make out much of a reading plan, because books I wasn’t planning on [...]

“I see with a myriad eyes”

November 9, 2008

A great C.S. Lewis quote courtesy of The Kibitzer:*

In reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself. Like the night sky in the Greek poem, I see with a myriad eyes, but it is still I who see. Here, as in worship, in love, in moral action, and in knowing, I [...]

Four Houses, Four Types of Readers?

October 22, 2008

Professor Stephen Brown of Ulster University, after conducting an interview study of readers ages 7 and up, says there are four types of Harry Potter readers, and they correspond to the four houses:

His research found ‘Hufflepuff’ readers take the tales at a slow, steady and systematic pace and enjoy re-reading the books over and over.
‘Gryffindor’ [...]

What were you doing at this time last year?  You were reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  I remember dropping Sophia off with Tricia’s mom and heading to the park on two hours’ sleep (I had read until 5am), and then reading all day long.
Today marks the anniversary of the release of Deathly [...]

Christ Symbol and Resurrection in Half-Blood Prince

Once you hit page 500 of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, it would take a heart attack to tear your eyes away from the pages that remain, and even then, you’ll probably be dragged to the cath lab clutching the book in your hands. As soon as the pace picked up around [...]
