Hog’s Head Podcast Episode #1, Tentatively…

Question for PC/Windows Users:  Anyone having difficulty listening to the podcast because it’s in m4a format (rather than mp3)?  Lemmeno.
This is Episode #1 of “Hog’s Head.” This is sort of tentative, because (a) I can only get it to work in m4a format (not mp3), and I don’t know if that’s good or bad, and (b) I really have no idea what I’m doing as it relates to creating proper feeds and so on. This may turn into a false start, but I’ll do it like this until I get some technical help that teaches me to do otherwise (this also gives me the option of changing the name, if I want).

Regular “first episode” caveats apply – it’s awkward, there are uncomfortable pauses, and it’s not as smooth as I’d like. I used the words “awesome” and “um” too much. They’ll get better, I promise.

Hey, i’ve been checking out your site for a couple weeks now. I was wondering what you are hoping to do with the whole site and where you want it to go and lead into- especially after the final 7th book. Also, i was curious what you plan to do with tying the Christian faith into Harry Potter. Is that your main focus? and to spread the word of God? or just talk about Harry Potter? i dunno, i like both. I was also wondering, as a past youth pastor, if you plan to use this site as a sort of tool to tell others about Christ, or to ___ soley do Harry Potter stuff? Anyway, i’d just figure i’d ask you, i was curious. I like the site and all the articles you’ve posted, they’re all very interesting and intriguing.
God Bless,
-Phil

Phil, thanks for the comment! The primary purpose of this site is indeed to talk about Harry Potter. It’s not intentionally evangelistic, no. Anyone can of course click on over to restlessreformer.com if they want to read what I have to say about theology – that’s where my primary focus is on the Christian faith.

But here, I try to set an example of calm, reasonable dialogue (“let your reasonableness be known to all”) and also let people know that not all Christians are of the anti-Potter mindset. I would probably say that literary criticism takes the primary place here (you’ll notice in the archives that over the last year, “Defense Against the Harry Haters” posts have become less frequent, and “Hogwarts School of Literature” posts have increased).

After Book 7…well, there will certainly be a lot of discussion and analysis to do. I’ll spend a good amount of time on that, but my guess is that in due course, conversation about Harry Potter will drop off pretty much across the board. When that finally happens (and who knows how long it will take, but my guess is we’ll very quickly see just how much “speculation” fuels the fires of fandom, and just how little literary criticism matters), I’ve thought about expanding the site to include other well-written fantasy/fiction works (Narnia and LoTR, for example). But we’ll see…it’s too far away to tell.

Thanks for the compliment. I’m glad you’re enjoying the posts!
