“The Great Snape Debate” Book

by Travis Prinzi on April 17, 2007

The Great Snape Debate, by Orson Scott Card, Joyce Millman, and Amy Berner.

Since I absolutely love Orson Scott Card (does it get any better than Ender’s Game?), I’ll be ordering a copy immediately. I’m really excited to read what he has to say about “the great Snape debate.”

Here’s the press release about it.

I love Orson Scott Card’s Women of Genesis series as well as his Ender’s Game series, so I may have to search for this book in stores. :) I’m pretty sure he’ll be taking the “Snape is good” side, mainly because after Half-Blood Prince was published he reviewed it on his website and argued that 1) Dumbledore was not dead and 2) Snape was still Dumbledore’s man and would serve as a trusted Death Eater until the opportune moment. Well, we know Dumbledore is dead, but I doubt he would have changed his opinion of Snape. We’ll just have to wait and see. ;)

Ugh it comes out September 2007. By then we will have already read Deathly Hallows multiple times. It would be interesting what he writes.

Amazon doesn’t list a date for this, it’s still in pre-order. Do you know when it’s coming out? I have a stack of things I haven’t read yet, I’ve promised myself I won’t buy more books till I’ve read the ones I have and if I don’t get to it before July 21, then I just will have to forego some of them. I just don’t have time to read everything. :::::sigh:::::

The books are available now, until the end of September. If you can’t order them from amazon yet, you should at least be able to get them from your local Borders or Waldenbooks. (They’re specifically done for Borders).

Here’s the press release about them.

For some reason Amazon.com lists it as only pre-order. You can really find them at Borders? I hope so, because I’m going to head on over today if I have time. :) It’s worth a try.

If you’ve got time, it’s worth a shot at least. You could call over before you go.

Wow, this is exciting! I love Card’s writing, and I’m always interested in what he has to say about HP — he has made some staunch defenses of the series (and some wonderful insights into the books and films) on his website. This is definitely worth looking for. Thanks for letting us know about this…I’m going to check our local Borders tomorrow!

Yes, it’s at Borders now! YAY! I just bought it and read it last night. :) It’s very good, and naturally it addresses the topic in a slightly different way, but overall the content is everything that obsessed Snape advocates already know. :) It is an in-depth summary of all the arguements. Some newer stuff includes a comparison of Snape to other Byronic heros, traditional and modern, and flippant content such as Snape’s iPod and advice on how to deal with greasy hair. ;) Although the debate is presented from both sides, (flip the book for one arguement or the other), I still find the “Snape is good” evidence the most convincing.
