Halloween is always a special day for me now.
Here in Australia we don’t celebrate Halloween… really… at all. But we do get a lot of imported American television that tells us we should.
Anyway, you might remember last year my twins were born on the 31st. Well, they’re one now and a constant joy to us… Oh, for a full night’s sleep, though.

Matthew, if you haven’t already, you should read Something Wicked This Way Comes by Rad Bradbury. It’s the story of two boys, Will Halloway, born one minute before midnight, on October 30th, and Jim Nightshade, born one minute after midnight, on October 31st. The themes are very similar to HP: fear of death which drives people to sacrifice their souls, and the power of love over evil. It’s been years since I read it, but I thought of it today, as I was driving and watching the autumn leaves swirling in the wind. And then I read about your two lovelies, and remembered it again.
About Hallowe’en. We just came back from trick or treating. It was a beautiful night: chilly, but not too cold. All the children were out, rushing madly from door to door in a race against time. The houses were decorated with jack o’ lanterns, and orange pumpkin lights, and gravestones and ghouls coming out of the ground, and skulls and skeletons and dry ice smoke and every variation on the theme of witches, monsters and death you could imagine. A lot of the people handing out candy were dressed in costumes as well. Some were playing mood music – I can’t remember how many years it’s been since last I heard Tangerine Dream’s theme to Sorcerer It is totally a big deal here in Canada, and probably the most enjoyable festival of the year.
It’s Ray Bradbury I meant, not his cousin Rad, the TMNT fan.
Beautiful kids, Matthew!
Red Rocker, I haven’t finished Something Wicked This Way Comes but I agree it’s a good book.
Matthew, your twins are precious.
Matthew,
We could always take up a collection to fly you all to America when the girls are older so you can go trick or treating.
Beautiful girls. Congratulations again!
