The Forming Programming Schedule for Azkatraz has been released! There are lots of great talks slated for this conference, and I’m as excited about going to other presentations as I am about giving my own. Azkatraz begins Friday, July 18 and ends Tuesday, July 21. Here are my speaking days and times:
- Saturday, 3pm – 4pm: Feminism and Romance, Panel Discussion (Sadly, in competition with one of John Granger’s time slots)
- Sunday, 2pm to 3pm: “How Half-Bloods Became Purebloods,” Solo Presentation
- Sunday, 3:30pm – 4:30pm: “The Life of Severus Snape,” Panel Discussion (Moderator)
- Monday, 3pm – 4:30pm: “The Postmodern Potions Master,” Solo Presentation
- Monday, 8ish or 9ish – The Podcast Palooza. My portion of this show will be a panel discussion with James W. Thomas, John Granger, and myself, moderated by Greg and Penny of HP Progs. The Palooza starts at 8 or 9, and we’re the second podcast to go.
See the rest of the great programming here! Have you registered for Azkatraz yet? It’s going to be a great conference!

Sounds great! I wish I had the money to go. San Francisco would be nice to see. Maybe, I’ll try and see if they have some CD’s or something that they’re selling for programming.
Brent, they usually do, and there’s often a big discount if you order before the conference is over. I’ll blog about stuff like that while I’m there.
Sounds like very interesting discussions – I hope to make them all.
Hmmm, panel discussion or John solo? Will probably have to choose John. Plus, feminism gives me hives.
Honestly, I’d choose John, too. I submitted a proposal to do a presentation on my chapter in HPI on gender (with additional exploration of this gothic heroine stuff everyone thinks I’m so looney for), and I ended up on a panel discussion about feminism and romance!
I don’t think you’re looney for the gothic heroine stuff; it’s just a bit hard to wrap around at times.
Can you hire a stunt double to sit in on the panel for you so you can go to John’s presentation in disguise?
Well, it’s hard to wrap around it because I’ve been cryptic, because I want to publish this stuff, and publishers aren’t usually too happy about posting published stuff on blogs for free
Ah, so all this is part of a plot to get us to buy another book?
I’m registered for Azkatraz and am looking forward to hearing your presentations, Travis. You did a really great job at Portus last year. I’m also looking forward to finally meeting John Granger, and seeing James Thomas again. My mom and I met Dr. Thomas at Portus and thought he was fascinating. I’m also looking forward to hearing Melissa Anelli’s presentations. It’s going to be a great event!
Everyone here is invited to my Azkatraz presentation on Monday at 11:00 a.m. It is a comparison of common themes in Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings. You can read about it and my upcoming book at my new blog, http://phoenixweasley.wordpress.com. The book is called The Lord of the Hallows: Christian Symbolism and Themes in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter. Everyone, I’d love to read your comments. Thanks so much!
Yes, that’s one of the talks I’m hoping to get to.
Phew! The Snape panel doesn’t conflict with my presentation! It seems I’m always pitted against our favorite Potions Master. I’m talking about Luna at 4:30 Sunday. Hope to see you there.
