Why The Half-Blood Prince Movie Delay?

by Travis Prinzi on August 19, 2008

by Travis

Eric D. Snider debunks the following 4 Myths about the Half-Blood Prince movie delay:

  1. Half-Blood Prince was moved because WB was scared of Twilight. (That one’s just silly.)
  2. It got moved because WB was nervous about Daniel Radcliffe’s extra-curricular activities. (Referring to his appeared naked in Equus)
  3. WB moved Half-Blood Prince to the one-year anniversary of The Dark Knight in the hopes of duplicating that film’s success.
  4. Sending a petition to Warner Bros. demanding they reverse their decision will yield any results whatsoever.

In regard to myth #3, I can only blame all those people who rushed out to see The Dark Knight & thus pushed up its box office appeal instead of being prudent & not going, like me. If Dark Knight had made less money, WB would’ve needed the fall release of HBP to prop up their 2008 figures.

I’m very, very disappointed in all those who put their summer entertainment ahead of the Fall Movie Moment that would’ve been HBP. :)

On reflection I prefer the new timing: HBP July ‘09, DH1 Nov’10, DH2 May’11.

Result: 24 month gap between HBP and DH1 has been eliminated.

revgeorge, check out my comments on Dark Knight on Dave’s second Voldemort as a failed villain post. You must know by now how much I love HP. Yet I would not have missed that movie for all the Potter movies in the universe.

Red, you, of course, know I’m joking, I assume. :)

I did read your comment on the Voldy as Failed posting but I havent’ had a chance to really respond there yet & I’m not sure, after a point, that my comments would be very accurate, seeing as I haven’t seen Dark Knight yet. However, I did think your last comment on that very insightful.

WARNING! Gratuitous self-congratulations to follow:

The Dark Knight may have been a factor in other ways, though. Entertainment Weekly quotes an unnamed rival-studio exec as saying, “They don’t need the money this year anymore…. When a movie overperforms the way Dark Knight has, you really don’t need Harry Potter in the fall.”

…ahem…

I and my armed fuzzy comrade shall commence gloating… ;)

Yes, very well done, Dave. I had just logged on to make a comment about how the pub patrons had done a better job at speculating about the delay than the conspiracy theories, and you’re the one who nailed it.

Hi, this is my first time here, great site, I must say. Actually I am a bigger fan of Harry Potter books than movies, but that does not mean that I consider movies to be bad, quite contrary. I think that Rowling really has it when it comes to telling a story, with such a narrative brilliance.

J.C., welcome! Glad you found the site and like it. I think you’ll find that 99% of the folks who visit this site agree with you – we’re bigger fans of the books than the movies, though most of us do enjoy the films.

We’re having quite a conversation about that very thing, actually: http://thehogshead.org/2008/08/25/daniel-radcliffe-naked-who-cares/

And I just did a podcast on the books, the movies, and the effects of movie culture on the whole HP experience.
